I have a 05 Ram 2500. The A/C has been leaking freon. An orifice tube has been replaced but did not cure the problem. The techs have used dye in the freon and a "sniffer" test to try and find the leak. Their best guess is the compressor or another part they said was located in the dash. both will cost $1100 to replace. At this point it is turning into throwing money at it, a lot of money. Any suggestions on what might be the cause or how to find it?

i've seen alot of accumulators go bad around the welds. It has a bracket welded to it to allow it to mount to the firewall. I guess the rust and vibrations make them weak. For some reason it's normally hard to tell if one is leaking just looking with a black light, the best thing to do is run it with a little more dye then called for and wipe your hand across the bottom. If it's green it's leaking. The bottom of the accumulator stays wet with water so normally it's only a slight green.

my 05 had condensor replaced 1st year , couple leaks repaired 2nd year, compressor replaced 3rd year Last year they just topped off the freon & sent me on the way. Still running ok this year, but you can tell the passenger side is starting to blow warm when stuck in traffic. . Not overwhelmed by the build quality of this truck personally... ... ... ... . still have a 95 dodge 1500 that I've never had to mess with the ac, thought the 96 CTD we traded worked great too----so the "you're expecting too much" argument doesnt hold water with me.

for what its worth

The dealership finally found the leak, it was in the compressor. They had to take it apart to find it. Hopefully this will solve my A/C problems. Thanks for the advise
