Air Conditioning Selector Switch

How come my (2001 - 4x4 -auto) ventalotor switch seems to take forever to stop blowing cold air when I put it on just the face or face and feet position. This position I thought was to supply only ambient outside air. If I have the AC on and then it turns cool outside, like it does every evening here, and I turn the switch to these vent positions - it warms up, but doesn't seem to get the temperature it is outside. It is still a bit cool - like the AC is still working a bit ( I can stop it be adjusting the heat selector-but I don't want to do that) If I shut the darn thing off, and then wait say 5 minutes and turn to the vent position, it seems to be OK. Anybody else have something like this?

Mine does the same thing; after thinking a bit, I'm sure this is normal. Even after the A/C compressor is no longer running, the coils are still cool, the ducting is still cool, etc, so it just takes a few minutes before everything gets to the same temperature. It's the same thing as when you start the A/C on a hot day - the air gets cooler quickly, but it doesn't blow cold, 40 to 45 degree air until after 5 or 10 minutes of running on the high setting.

Just re-read your message. On my 2001, what I said applies for the "face only" position. On the "face and feet" position, according to my owner's manual, the A/C compressor "may or may not" still be running, so you need to use the "face only" or "feet only" positions if you want to be sure that the A/C is not on.

From a previous thread and from empirical evidence (checking the behavior of my 2001), I believe that any of the "multi-output" settings (feet+defrost, feet+face) turn on the A/C - you don't just get A/C on the two settings where it's explicitly labeled.

Is it me or does the AC compresor run with the heat or defrost on. My truck makes a clicking sound in the morning when I go out to start it and run the heat. I popped the hood and watched the clutch engage for a few seconds. It does this all the time the heat or defrost is on. Can't be good for the clutch on the compresor. Does anybody else have this problem?

AC positions

The A/C runs in the defrost and defrost/dash positions to remove moisture from the interior and to defog all glass faster.



The A/C also runs in the 3 positions on the left side of knob- max A/C (NO outside air), A/C (outside air) AND the feet/dash combo position-

although this last one doesn't have the snowflake icon by it the A/C still runs there.



My Y2K Durango at work runs the same way.
