I need to disembowel the dashboard of my truck to replace the heater core. To get to it, I need to recover the R-134, then disconnect the a/c lines to the evaporator.

The connectors don't look anything like those shown in the 1996 TSM. The connectors I have look like they have a flat plate sticking through them. What kind of tool does it take to get them apart?

Thx.

If I remember right the expansion block bolts to the evaporator. A bolt holds the lines on and two torx hold the block to the evaporator.

Your recollection is right. What I need is the tool that disconnects (and reconnects) the freon lines. They appear to be aluminum tubing on both sides of the in & out connections.

I can do good ol' R-12, but the new R-134 lines downright baffle me.

if these connectors are like the ones on my fords, they have a spring that must be expanded by a tool like bfoot17 linked in. there are 2 o-rings on the line once you separate it. NAPA also has a cute 8 sided diecast tool for doing this. that is what i have.
