On the 2001 models is the AC on all the time? How do you turn it off. has anyone tried a inline switch to the compressor? will that set off any codes?

the a/c does run all the time in most settings and you need this to keep the moisture out of the inside and the windows from fogging [works like a dehumidifier] it is also better if the compressor runs regularly than if you shut it off for long periods of time===Sam

I can't remember which modes it actually runs it but the important thing is to keep it running. You will have less leakage from the comp shaft seal if oil is circulated regularly.

Other than actual AC mode, I thought the compressor only ran when dial is set in either of the last two positions... . partial or full defrost?

In all positions with the heat control turned all the way to cold. It blows really cold air. on my '97 you could run all possitions in either air mode or a/c mode. on this 2001. 5 its on all the time. I do like to drive with the windows down and feel ambient temps. I never thought I would have to adjust the temp control with the windows down. also its a HP consuming item that also makes the engine run hotter. It would nice to be able to turn the AC off when your running over hilly terrain with a load in the summer with the windows down.

anybody ever install any swithes on the compressor??

Tom, I've been doing the same on the Ram as I do on my Wrangler... and it appears they both work the same. I normally leave the dial set at the single down arrow which is floor only. Temp is then adjusted with the other dial. During warm weather, temp is all the way the left, and in that down-arrow position the only thing that comes in is outside air. The compressor doesn't cycle unless I put it in actual AC mode or either of the defrost modes.

I thought the AC was only on at the defrost positions, and where the snowflakes were (1st two), but in mine it seems that the ac is on also in the combo upper and lower blower setting, but at only either the upper or lower it is not. In the dual(?) setting, the air was cold, but at the foot blower only or upeer registers only, the coldest setting was outside temp air.

There are only two settings on the 98-2001's where the A/C doesn't run:
On dash vent only
On floor vent only

It runs all other times to de-humidify the air.
