air conditioning will only come out on the floor and the defroster, not threw the vents. I went to the dealer near me and they said it was a pump that was on the engine, $630. 00. Could this be so mething else? My truck is a 95 2500, I bought it 4 or 5 mths ago with 52000 miles on it. Now it has 69500. I don't no how to add signature. Sorry.

What truck do you have? Do a signature so we can help better. If its a 96 there is a recall #720 I believe. That will fix all vacum related components free if oil contaminanted. Unlimited mileage/7years. It sounds like a vacum leak and with low/no vacum you are experiencing the default position. Is the cruise control working?

The recall is #720 and has to do with the seal between the powersteering pump and the vacum pump going bad and sucking oil into the vacum system and ruining all the vacum components. If thats whats wrong the stealer should replace all the vacum stuff at no charge. I had to get kinda ugly with the local stealer here but they are the dealer from he!!.

BillG,

I have a '96' that did the same thing. Problem turned out to be the vac motor (actuator) that switches between defrost and vent. Does your cruise work? Can you select either defrost or floor? If the cruise works and you can select defrost or floor and the only problem is when you select vent and the air comes out the defrost, then I would check the vac motor under the dash. Several of us have had the same problem. Its fairly simple to replace and a new one costs around $25. 00. Just be careful of the plastic ears on the bellcrank. I broke one off, but the remaining one is holding ok.

Hope this helps.

Air Conditioning Vacuum Problems

Inspect the little 1/8 " plastic vacuum lines along the firewall just behind the trubo. Mine got hot and the vacuum collapsed a section about an inch long. The visible side of it looked ok but when I ran my fingers along the lines I felt an irregular spot on it. When I removed it I could see the problem and when I replaced it everything worked fine.

The same thing happened agin in about the same area so I cut the plastic tubing a few inches from the ends and pushed those ends into a suitable length of soft rubber vacuum line. Since then I have not had any other problems with this and it only cost a couple of bucks.

It would be worth checking this out!:) :)

My A/C gives a little "grunt" when I first switch it on. Then all is well & nice cold air comes out of all the vents. Is this the same thing you're talking about? Could this become a serious problem? I've also done the control swich "bomb" by removing the 2 defroster contacts; now I can use windshield defrost in the winter with or without running the A/C compressor if I want to.
