i never did a mpg test. i do know that my 5'er pulled easier with the wing on,, verses off and the wind hitting the flat front of my high profile camper.
i believe it would take huge amounts of miles of towing to justify the cost of buying a wing for mpg savings.
I agree with Iceman. It would take many miles of towing to compensate for the cost of a wing. His does look cool though.
Next time you see a pickup with a wing and a 5er in tow (that is parked) step in front of it and look at how little of the front surface area of the 5er is covered. Not much. The 5er is way taller and wider than the wing, so it doesn't do much good. Also realize that the wing will only help if the wind is calm or directly from in front of you. Any cross wind will negate any benefit the wing gives you, and if the wind is strong and from about a 40 to 90 degree angle to you the wing will add MORE drag than you are already getting from the front of the RV.
hmm, im thinking i will just build a storage box on the front of the GN then, and make it aerodynamic at the same time. will end up saving a bit of cashi think.
All you need to do is look where the bugs hit the trailer, all the way up at the clearance lights. If the bugs are hitting that high, the air must be also. And also, there are very few bugs on the wing. That's a big differance if you ask me.
I've been looking at a wing for a couple of years. I hear the same thing. Bugs way up high, more stable tow, very little mpg gain. I think I remember that someone had calculated that you would have to do 300k wing miles to break even.
