K&N revisited

I was shopping for an aftermarket air filter and there are many, many choices. I only have an EZ as far as modifications on my truck and the store I went to was trying hard to sell me the AFE cool air box setup. If in fact your truck was not getting enough air wouldn't the filter minder tell you so and is the air that much cooler coming through the cowling? I know most people think bigger and more is better but enough is also enough. Thanks

My feeling has always been that if the filter minder doesn't move your engine is getting all the air it can use. The stock airbox does a good job pulling cooler air from outside the underhood and the price is right since most trucks come with one included. Removing the snorkel from in-between the airbox and wheelwell is good idea though.

Moving to Products.

I'm going to echo Illflems comments. On the under 300 pony 2nd Gen trucks that we've tested, an aftermarket air system (including our own Scotty system), just didn't have much if any affect. We noticed a little better turbo spool-up, but thats about it.

The HO 3rd Gen trucks do benefit from an air system at stock power, although how much is questionable. We tend to use EGTs (versus the filter minder) as a guide though. The 3rd gen trucks will typically see between 25F and 50F reductions in EGTs with our Ram Air III (we haven't tested any other systems, so folks may want to chime in here).

I agree with the above. I have run several setups from stock box with snorkel, stock with K&N, snorkel removed with k&n and finally a napa 2790 w/ outerwears cover. I must say that the only difference was the noise level. i like the bhaf best (silencer ring removed).
