High Tech's new HTTss 71 turbo Beta test

Is the Edge W/Attiude causing this problem?

As I eluded to on another thread here on the TDR, I recently installed an Amsoil Ea Absolute Efficiency universal filter (part #: EAAU3050) on my daily beaten VW TDI.

It replaced a very old K&N oiled gauze filter that was dirty and had developed a few holes in it after coming loose and getting entangled with the shift cable mechanism. D'oh!

As promised in the other thread - here are some pictures I took of the special occasion. I didn't take any install pics since it is of little interest to those on this forum. What may be of interest to those on this forum is my opinion of this filter.

My highly-scientific method of determining the filtration capacity and efficiency is patent pending: Hold the filter up to direct sunlight and take a picture from the inside out to look for holes or grossly overexposed portions of the picture - these are places where dirt and other goodies can pass.

The construction quality of the Amsoil filter is better than anything I've seen and is lightyears better than the old K&N. There are no metal clamps holding the filter pleats together and the epoxy work at the ends is very nice. The fact that the Amsoil is a dry media and has airflow at the end of the filter is just the icing on the cake compared to the K&N that had been dirtying my MAF sensor for who knows how long.

I'm not exactly comparing apples to oranges, either. The K&N is easily a 15+ year old design and was innovative back then. Now that times have changed, the K&N shows its age AND the Amsoil will still hold its own against comparable modern products.

I realize my history on this forum for slamming Amsoil and their products, but this is one I'd highly recommend and I just might be seeing the light (pun intended). I still won't leave oil in the crankcase for 90k miles, though. :-laf

Cheers,

Matt

The Nanofibers are sweet. I spend a lot of time dealing with the whole lineup from drop-ins to cones to street rod nanos for mounting on carbs. Good stuff. Thanks Matt!

If you cant see light through the Amsoil filter, it is light years ahead of the K&N. I went back to paper 3 years ago when a NEW K&N let in more dirt than the old one. Holding it up to the light made it look like a miniature night sky with all the pinholes of light coming through.

So far, so good.

I didn't notice any difference between the K&N, no air filter at all and the Amsoil. Mileage is all over the place with this car... 43-46mpg (haha) - I guess it depends on how heavy my right foot is... and it's usually very heavy.

I am a bit off topic here, But how well does anyone think the new dry filter from AFE will work? I just ordered an AFE stage 2 dry S intake setup. I am getting rid of my walker airsep due to it choking my current turbo down. I can peg my filter indicator real easy I even tested it with a vaccuum tester and its ok. I ran it on a dyno without a filter on it and it still pegged it out:eek: . I have it in the intake tube between the turbo and airsep. This told me it was time for a change. The airsep was good up to about 450 hp with the BD single but its outgrown now.

Along with BILLVO, I would like to know about the dry filter, I have the AFE setup, but I'm looking at options to replace the oiled filter, but would like to keep the heat shield. I think the normal sized BHAF is a little too long to fit in the box thing. Thanks.
