As I eluded to on another thread here on the TDR, I recently installed an Amsoil Ea Absolute Efficiency universal filter (part #: EAAU3050) on my daily beaten VW TDI.
It replaced a very old K&N oiled gauze filter that was dirty and had developed a few holes in it after coming loose and getting entangled with the shift cable mechanism. D'oh!
As promised in the other thread - here are some pictures I took of the special occasion. I didn't take any install pics since it is of little interest to those on this forum. What may be of interest to those on this forum is my opinion of this filter.
My highly-scientific method of determining the filtration capacity and efficiency is patent pending: Hold the filter up to direct sunlight and take a picture from the inside out to look for holes or grossly overexposed portions of the picture - these are places where dirt and other goodies can pass.
The construction quality of the Amsoil filter is better than anything I've seen and is lightyears better than the old K&N. There are no metal clamps holding the filter pleats together and the epoxy work at the ends is very nice. The fact that the Amsoil is a dry media and has airflow at the end of the filter is just the icing on the cake compared to the K&N that had been dirtying my MAF sensor for who knows how long.
I'm not exactly comparing apples to oranges, either. The K&N is easily a 15+ year old design and was innovative back then. Now that times have changed, the K&N shows its age AND the Amsoil will still hold its own against comparable modern products.
I realize my history on this forum for slamming Amsoil and their products, but this is one I'd highly recommend and I just might be seeing the light (pun intended). I still won't leave oil in the crankcase for 90k miles, though. :-laf
Cheers,
Matt
