Hello All,

In reading some of the back TSBs there was "DUST OUT" issue spoke of which lead to some testing conducted by Geno's on the K&N air filter. Does anyone have any information on this? Sounds like Geno's no longer sells K&N filters. Should we really stay away from using these filters?

Thanks!

Stick with FleetGuard/Mopar filters as they filter VERY well and they flow VERY well. Newer trucks avoid oil type filters as they will mess with sensors. Warranty can be denied also.

I used to run a K&N in my 97 and oil analysis showed good silicon numbers. That said, I'm not running one in my 06. I use the Wix with a 4" pleat and have zero restriction on the filter minder and good silicon numbers as well. Other than being "reusable" there really is no benefit to the K&N, there are more downsides than up as listed above.

Yes, you need to talk yourself out of a K&N. Save the cash and just remove the air filter completely to eliminate air filter restriction. Not only does K&N let more dirt through the extra dirt helps clog up the DPF when equipped. Silicon and other dirt in the small soot particle sized filter filter won't burn off... There are some studies out there that prove this lack of filtering:

The long thread with dead links:

There are other "dry" aftermarket air filters that do a good job, but, the oiled band aid gauze filters are not one of them. I have had the ECM pop codes and limp on DPF equipped diesels say when removing a collapsed/failed air filter just to make it to the parts store.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I searched TDR but couldn't find the previous post regarding the dangers of using a K&N. Does anyone have a part number for the fleetguard or MOPAR filter? I read Mopar has an upgraded filter but I'm not sure how old that info is. Longevity is the goal.

Cheers

Here are the part#'s for the upgraded (i.e. thicker) Mopar filter. You can choose between any of them--

Napa P/N - FIL9946
Wix P/N - 49946
Dodge P/N - 53034249AA

It will depend on how you drive it and where. If you don't drive it hard and live in wet climate dust is not a real problem. The problems start with dusty areas and consistent as the air flow will suck the dirt and oil thru the spaces in the filter. Works fine on an NA engine but an oiled filter on an FI engine is just asking for oil, and dirt, in the intake tract. The 4" pleat filters I have tested to almost 500 HP and 1000 TQ and there is drop off between filter in and open intake. A cold air mod to the stock box would be a benefit in the summer but in the winter you want to block it.

I don't want to sound like I'm second guessing anyone but the part numbers above don't seam to fit a 2012. How can I double check the part number matches the heavy duty (upgraded) filter for a 2012?

Thanks,

Thanks,

Check Geno's Garage for the correct air filter for your truck. Geno's states that the air filters from 2007.5 to 2017 for the 6.7L engine are the same part numbers. For the MOPAR air filter it is AF-530340514AB $33.95 and the Fleetguard air Filter is AF-27684 $27.95 these prices do not include shipping. This is from the latest catalog issue 96 spring 2017 page 5.

For the Record -
Editor’s Comments – Dust Out
If you spend a day answering the tech line at Geno’s Garage you would be surprised at
the number of phone calls asking about air filters and cold air boxes.
The staffs’ answer: If you value your rights to warranty consideration, leave the air
intake system alone.
prior to this TSB there was the 09-001-10 TSB. prior to these TSBs there was the
“K&N story,” the short version being that testing was done on this filter in 1999 by
Dodge and Cummins. prior to the test, K&N was the number two selling item at Geno’s
Garage. After the test, K&N filters were no longer offered by Geno’s. However, folks
still want to know more as aftermarket advertising does an admirable job of selling
these parts. So, if you need to help control exhaust gas temperatures due to the high
horsepower you are making, you should consider a cold air box and a multi-layer filter.
The Geno’s folks do sell a multi-layer filter. See TDR Issue 56, page 150 and Issue 59,
page 130 for the cold air box story. See TDR Issue 34, page 105 and Issue 77, page 56,
for the K&N story.

My bad....those part #'s are in fact air filters for 3rd gen trucks...didn;t look hard enough to see that this was in a 4th gen thread,

Try a S&B cold air intake. Judging from the previous comments there are pros and cons, I have been very satisfied with mine after 30,000plus miles

Something to always remember , If the OEM filter was restricting air volume to the point it effected power the Turbo's vacuum HG would cause it (filter) to collapse or be suck into the turbo, Yes If you add HP that = more Fuel More Fuel = more air so at some point the turbo air supply will max out limiting the HP. it does NO good to spend $100s on intake when it just not necessary. But if you like it for looks or ease of access go for it.

Hey Zac please fill in your trucks info.

If your truck is a 13 or newer it already had a cold air intake. The filtration system on these newer trucks is really good right out of the box.

But if someone wants to spend money have at it!

Over 8 to 12 years ago there were at least two threads and testing documentation dealing with air filters and K&N was at the near bottom of the list in these findings. Again IMO stay with OEM Mopar/Fleetguard or get something better if more air flow is necessary but dont settle for aftermarket hype without testing results at the higher air flows!

Thanks,

This is the one they told me fits the 2013. I think there was no change from 2012-2013
