What options are there to the stock air filter besides K&N? What is a pscotty (sp?)?

Amsoil has some kind of an oiled element - never saw one tho. I used a big round paper element(12"L x 10. 5"dia)and took out the stock housing. I had to make a round neck adaptor to go on the 6" round open end of the element. Craig

Offically Amsoil does not make one for the 2001 model yet. The 2000 model filter will fit but I have had a problem with it deforming on the edge a bit. No leaks, but the amount of air seems to cause it to displace a little. I went back to a stock filter for now untill Amsoil comes out with a newer design. I'v used them on my other vechicle and have not had any problems with them. They work great. Just got to be patient untill they get one made for the 2001. Only other one I know of is the K&N and I guess you need to use a pre-filter with them cause you can see through them. Lots of pin holes. Some people like them though.

The Psychotty kit replaces the entire stock airbox with a high flow K&N filter that is in its own housing and draws air through a 4. 5" hole in your firewall from the same place you A/C gets its air from. What this does is lower your EGT by about 150degrees plus gives you ALOT faster spool up and acceleration. It also sounds great. They are aound $150. 00 (i bought mine a while ago so i dont know the exact price).
It is simple to install, all you need is a hole saw.
A Psychotty kit is definatley the cheapest, easiest and fastest power increase you can do.
If you want to keep your stock airbox, then get an Amsoil or K&N filter for it and remove the fenderwell boot. That will increase your airflow but you will still be sucking hot engine compartment air.

I like illflem's 'son of psyscotty' idea of replumbing the stock airbox for cooler air intake.

I am still leery of drilling holes in my cowl and raising the noise level inside the cab...

How about running the extra hose thru the inner fenderwell like the original airbox does?
Wouldn't that increase cooler airflow?

The hole in the fenderwell is not big enough to supply the engine with anywhere near as much air as the Psychotty or the Todd induction does. And using ducting will further decrease available volume to the engine. You really cant get any better then then the hole in the cowl, you get LOTS of cool air with no restrictions or ducting to deal with. Its just 1 hole, and if you ever want to remove it, just put a piece of aluminum flashing over it with some silicone and fold the insulation back over it, thats it. The cab noise is really not that bad, especially if you did not take out the silencer ring. I dont even notice it anymore. If you listen to the radio whenever you drive, you wont even know you have a Psychotty.

Just to make things clear, I left the fender hole intake just the same, with horn, with the Son of Phscotty, the air comes in from two places. What can I say, it works and is cheap. If you a concerned about the noise here is something I've thought of but have never tried, make a dam in the air intake cowl in-between the engine air intake hole and the vent intake hole. This could be done using spray in foam insulation or any other idea you come up with. It will make a difference in sound, just turning the climate control to off or recirc lowers the sound from a Pyscotty. I don't mind the sound much, but on a long drive I end up masking the sound with the stereo, the high pitch gets annoying after a while.

Now that the temps have warmed I did a little airbox experiment. I have a digital temp gauge sender in the air intake horn about 6" from the grid heaters, I can switch between intake temp and AT temp with the same gauge. Cruising in 90° weather with the Phscotty the intake temp was reading 100°- 110°. Put the factory airbox back in, without horn, the temp jumped to 150°-160°. Also tried my Son of Phscotty modified airbox, read just 10° higher than the Phscotty unit. Don't need to tell you which one isn't ever going back in.
