Yes folks, I have more on my mind besides the hitch. :D

I wrote to the Fleetguard people regarding the air filter. Here is the response. Can anyone confirm that with a real world comparison? Or the measurements of the outside of the plastic perimeter and the depth of the filter element from the top of the plastic perimeter to the end of the paper element.

From Fleetguard: "Our records indicate the 2003 Dodge should use the same air filter as the 2002, an AF25541"

Cheers, Casey

The local dodge dealer parts guy said they are two different part numbers. I was hoping to use an AFE filter from a 2002 but they say it wont fit. BD says one will be available real soon.

That's Good

Mine seems to be very restrictive, the indicator is at 35%. I haven't actually measured, but the new air box appears to be somewhat smaller than the one on my old truck. Looking foreward to AFE coming out with a unit for the '03s.

Theres has to be a miscalibration with the filter minder on these trucks. My truck is also showing 35% restriction on the gauge and I have seen a few other posts claiming they to showed a 35% restriction. I bet a BHAF will make a big difference in the gen 3's.

Mine pulls down to 35% empty, while towing a 40' 5er it went to 65%. I layed a filter off my 00 on the box, and it was at least 2" or more longer, didn't check the thickness.

Casey,

9 7/8" x 10 7/8" x 1 1/2" I found what might have been causing some of my restriction. The filter was clogged with feathers  , must have ingested a bird, uh, a red bird. Yea, those feathers were sucked way up into the pleats. I pulled them one by one and reset the filter minder, we'll see.

Fireman

Must have been a small turkey. :D The question is, if all you found was feathers in the air cleaner, where is the rest of him?? I am sure you will find him come the warmer weather.

And so much for asking Fleetguard. I was surprised when they told me it was the same number too. Oh well. Fleetguard will have one soon. Be a while before I need an air filter but I like to keep at least one of each filter in stock.

Casey

It wasn't a red bird

It came back to me after a while. It was a large Brown Thrasher. When it hit it looked like a feather explosion. I remember checking my grill, thinking that it might have busted it. It hit right in front of the air intake and must have sucked all those loose feathers right into the airbox. Some vacuum, huh.

Basically, a Diesel engine's power is predicated upon the amount of air and fuel it can injest, burn and expel. If there is a heavy suction being pulled against your air filter, you're likely being robbed of power. Stopping the air flow completely is how run-away Diesels are stopped.

FederalMan

I wouldn't doubt that at all Federal Man. Most new vehicles
have restrictive intakes (and exausts), thanks alot EPA. The '03s have shown signs of being more restrictive than previous models.

Come on aFe !

Fireman

I believe that an intake air restriction will also create higher exhaust gas temperatures. Railroads have experienced this when operating their diesel-electric locomotives in long tunnels. There were even instances when locomotive horsepower output was lowered to prevent overheating in tunnels.

Anxiously awaiting a performance filter and/or intake... .

Frankly; I'm more interested in this then a power box right now.

When I get on the throttle hard I leave a vapor trail of unspent fuel; only one thing causes that ... not enough air (or too much fuel; but that's like a girl too pretty; no such thing IMO).

And it's still bone stock.

Better filter or intake... PLEASE SOMEONE MAKE ONE SOON! :D

Is the intake different then the 2002 gasser? If not I'm really surprised there isn't atleast a K&N for it by now.

I just spoke with afe and they said the '03 filter is due out the beginning of first quarter. That sounds like just a few weeks or so.

Go to the forums at deiseltruckresource.com and click on the high performance section. There is a sticky post there on it. They sell em at wildcat deisel.

AIR FILTER BUMMER

THEY GIVE YOU MORE HP AND TQ AND CHOKE IT WITH A SMALLER AIR FILTER THAT DOESN'T HAVE A MEDIUM THAT WILL LET AIR THRU. THE FILTER MINDER ON MINE SHOWED 35% WHEN I TEST DROVE IT. LETS GET IT FIXED. TBOB

Ristriction

There may be a little restriction with the new air box, but from what I hear from DC and the dealer is that the indicator is not calibrated correctly for the application. I not saying anything against a BHAF, but I wouldn't worry about the stock box.
