what would be the best air flow unit for my truck ?

k&N ? afe 1 or 2 ? theres a guy at a local shop that wants to sell me a cool air unit thing, cant remember name of place, something with green in it.

or is there something better?

are there any sound changes from changing ?

im lost, all i know is i want my truck to breath better

You will get different opinions on this subject. I use the B. H. A. F Cummins part # AH 19047 I think, some use AFE and there are others. The general opinion of most is to stay away from K&N. I had one and after I put the Edge EZ in and my boost went up I could suck it dry and guess where that oil goes. Not sure of the green one though.

Air Filter

I am using a Tru-Flow foam filter. It filters quite a bit better than stock paper or the gauze mesh types. It flows very well, and sounds good too. I also took out the intake silencer and replaced it with a 7" piece of 5" exhaust pipe. You also cant beat the price of these things. About $55. 00, and they are meant to last for years with regular cleaning.

I put in an AFE Stage 1 and the Proguard 7 air filter. Also added the torque tube. YES there is a sound difference, turbo is a lot more "noticable".

I liked that so much I also removed the silencer ring to make her really sing!

I'm very satisfied. Check my rigs pics for the set up.

the "green" one is probably evergreen industries, I think. They make a couple of the intakes, K&N and either air raid or volant. Aout a year ago they said something about making the things with their name on them. Maybe that's what they were trying to sell you. I think they only make the plastic part, I'm not sure, it's been awhile.

I have an AFE Proguard7 drop-in in the stock airbox that has been swiss-cheesed. the x-tube got replaced with a 5"id exhaust coupler and the silencer ring went away with the stock turbo. I now run a TAD B1-04 that has no provisions for a silencer ring with the above mods, It whistles anytime the truck is moving even @ 0 boost. I wouldn't run a K&N, for the reasons above, I have run a K&N and it lost its oil and didn't stop some of the dirt. And it WAS correctly oiled (the K&N factory did it).

TrueFlow If you want to keep the stock airbox and some cash in your pocket. Fits in the Stock airbox and filters and flows better. Turbo has more noise at WOT. Think the web sit is www.trueflow.com check them out. They tested all the big gun filters and the trueflow filtered the best.

What is an eadge ez? I have put an airaid I was told by the shop here that it was better than K&N The K&N guy tried to sell me a kit for $250. 00. I am also thinking about a power chip but not sure how it works in cold weather. I live in Alaska?

Got any pictures of the BHAF?

Thanks,

BHAF looks like a filter for a shop vac if you ask me :-laf

I have a drop in K&N in mine, was there when I bought it. Seems to be ok, though the truck is stock other than a Superchips programmer, which I have set on "tow"... not going to go all out with crazy performance stuff.

I have the TrueFlow drop in. Very nice fit, and as Cali-600 said, it does increase the sound of the turbo. I will buy one of these again. An added bonus, the filter is pleated. That allows for more surface area, and increased integrity under heavy vacuum. Oo.

I thought I had the air filter thing figuered out. Did an oil analysis (double dump sample container prior to taking actual sample) and the silicone was high (21 ppm 5k miles) indicating I need to change the filter more often or a different filter.

Point is unless you do a OA occassionally that test for silicone you are just guessing like I was.

I like my filter because I think it does what it should, but I will change it more often, test again, see what the results are, and then continue with a shorter change period, or change the filter medium to something else (UNI?) until I get the silicone where it should be (~ 4 ppm).

Just some thoughts.

bhaf

I installed a carquest 87790 and lost 3. 5 mpg :--) That was over the exact same route pulling the same 5vr with the same load at the same mph using hand calc. Went from 11. 5 to 8! I also noticed my egt's were 300° higher and this at $3. 00 per gallon :{ . Since I did not have my stock box and was doing interstate I used a screwdriver and poked several holes in the paper and got 9. 5 on the return trip thats 25% better. Needless to say I replaced that pos with the stock box and ordered an AirAid. Hope it helps as much as the bhaf hurt.

I thought the BHAF was good??? I thought there was the mother of all air filter tests run in Issue 34 page 105... I dont have a copy, but that testing showed the AFE 7 was the only way to go... did it include the TrueFlow???
