I have a question on Air Filters. I have an 03 4x4 and I do love the truck. People always ask me if I like it and I tell them if I won the lottery I would by two more just like it. When I got the truck it had an AFE Stage I on it and an Edge EZ. I upgraded the AFE to a Stage II. Unloaded I could get as high as 25 MPG on the highway with 33" tires. I upgraded the chip to Juice with attitude. During the week I was with out the chip and back to stock I got a call from a mechanic friend that said I should change air filters. He said that two trucks had come into the dealer with the AFE intakes and the cylinders were Scored beyond belief. I immediately bought a Trueflow and installed it. Now unloaded on the highway I can't get over 20. 5 MPG.

What are your thoughts about these filters? AFE seems to be one of the most popular ones on the market. But are they that bad for the Engine?

Get an engine oil analysis running the AFE and see what the silicates number is! That's the clearest way to tell if the air filter is allowing too much dirt to pass.
See Blackstone labs or Oilguard for testing.

Well now I feel stupid!

I assumed that the scoring was due to the filter. That was the only mod those trucks had I was told.

It never entered my mind to do an oil sample. I will look into both of those thanks.
