Amsoil Rear Diff. Oil Recommendation???

Status

All this talk about air filters, has my head spinning:confused:

I have been running the K&N filter that fits in the stock air box for 14 months now. I also have 5 1'1/4" holes drilled in the back side of the air box and have removed the air box to fender adapter. I checked today and I a slight amount of black soot on the inlet of the turbo, but not much.

Which filter is the one you guys would recommend. I don't have a problem with EGT's 1100* max towing loaded with the K&N, but I don't want to plug up the intercooler with oil--and I have probably over oiled it in the past.

I want a good one without having to Modify a bunch of stuff.

Thanks

Max Wedge,

For ~35-45 bucks or so, why not try the BHAF? Remove the stock air box, lay a piece of foam on the studs, using the stock hose and screw clamps, fasten the filter just letting it lay on the fender. Thirty minutes and a cup of coffee tops.

Try it out. Don't like it? Advertise it for sale, someone will take it off your hands. No big hole in the firewall like you need for the Pyschotty.

I had EGTs too high till I went with the Amsoil filter AND removed the snorkel on the air box. I’m changing to the BHAF tonight. I do not expect any performance gains between the Amsoil filter and the BHAF. I just don’t feel comfortable using a oiled foam filter on dusty dirt roads.

Installed my BHAF a week ago piece of cake to put on. Towed with it once so far 16,000 lbs. for 400mi. love it so far. Time will tell.

Confused...

I don't get it  . Why would you want to buy a NON cleanable air filter ? I have used K&N filters for years and no probllems to date. Sam

Sam,

How long have you used the K&N on a Cummins? There has been a bit of discussion on the effectiveness of the K&N. Some swear by them, some about them. I went from stock to K&N to the K&N 880/Pyschotty now to the BHAF. The latter two did reduce my EGT's, most of all the BHAF. Seems though that some owners see obvious differences, some don't. Whatever works I guess.

1. I started with stock.

2. Switched to K&N, but dirt got in.

3. Switched to Amsoil when I BOMB'ed th engine. No dirt. Max

EGT's of 1150-1200 at WOT.

4. Switched to BFAF. Too soon to tell on dirt issue. EGT's can't

get past 1000.

I have been using my std K&N for over a year now with no problems. Clean inside. Piers and I recently had it apart to install one of his Turbo's. Its was fine.

Seems like as I read these posts, and many others, the issues seems to be:

1. How much air does it flow

2. Is it trapping all the dirt

3. Is oil getting inside the system

4. Is it reusable

5. The turbo whine factor

My opinions are:

- A properly oiled K&N does not get oil inside the system.

- My Oil analysis shows a properly installed K&N does trap the dirt.

- A K&N versus a Paper of the same size, etc. flows more air

- Its washable and resuable. And has longer service intervals.

- The K&N lets you whine.

The attraction of the MoparGuy filter ( I believe this is the proper name for this, right! ) is it does flow more air, does not have the oil concern, does stop the dirt, and is not as loud as a similar K&N. -- I am considering this. Especially since I hear it works with the Jannetty heat shield.

So far with the reports it gets, this seems to be a great BOMB. DAWG-1 does have a point. If this filter only lasts standard maintenance interval, $40 plus is kinda pricy for a throw away.

Ultimately it comes down to your priorities, what order and weighting you apply to these factors.

I'm with you on the filters there are allot of opinions on them, I tried the BHAF just for the heck of it, my truck had a K&N in it when I bought it but I wanted to try something different. I don't tow like some do I just drive it everyday and I like the fact that I have a 915 CFM air filter to feed the motor, you will get more turbo noise with it but I like that, it was $33. 46 plus tax from cummins and I put some automotive type rubber bumpers on two of the factory studs for it to ride on and it is fine, now I can't tell you EGT's cause my plate is not here yet(Monday) but it runs about a 1000 or a bit more as it is wide open.

Take Care, Jim

I have my silencer ring missing. On long trips the K&N re0880 is too loud for 8 hours. Just installed the Napa 2790 (Mo Par Guy) filter. Noise is about the same a stock filter with the inlet piece out of the fender. I have not noticed any performance change between the K&N and Napa. I really liked the whine from the K&N around town, but after 8hrs I got a headache.

Is anyone running the BHAF on a first gen? I'm wondering if I can eliminate the rubber hose and just clamp the BHAF directly to the turbo.

Those of you with this filter, do you think this would work?

Thanks,

Mike

I ran the K&N in the stock box for 54,000miles. I had one problem with a bad boost/map sensor that was fixed by Cummins. The tech at Cummins told me about the K&N fowling out the electrical sensor he said it didn't matter how you oiled it that the turbo would suck the oil right off it. I thought he was feeding me a line of bullsh#@ so I continued to run the K&N. about a 1,000miles later I had another boost/map sensor go bad. Now thats 2 map sensor one cost $300 to get rplaced and the other was done at no cost by Mark Chapel at TST. So in turn I junked the K&N and went back to the napa filter. The down side is I don't think the turbo spulls up as fast with the napa filter and if it's like the mopar filters it will get dirty in a hurry. So now my BHAF is on order, should be here Monday or Tuesday and I will try it and see what happens. I have some stainless stell sheets around here at work and will try to make some sort of heat sheild for it.

Thats my K&N tail. I'm not saying it's not a good filter I have 2 more toys with K&Ns on them and they work great(best filter made for a ATV) the one on my Polaris has been there for 2 years and still doesn't need cleaned. I'm just saying I don't trust it on my truck.

Mr. Benson

I found out about the BHAF from the board in the Assessory section then just ordered it from cummins, in the post's there are pics of it so I thought I would give it a shot the part number is AH 19037 it is 12x10 roughly and will fit just fine and rides nicely on the rubber bumpers(Ace hardware or parts store) just look at them there are ones with a small hole in the end that threads on(with pressure) till they bottom out. I've raised the filter up several times to make sure it wasn't hurting anything on the filter and so far it is fine.

Hey Midnight;

I have installed the BHAF on my 93. The thing is to big and you will not be able to attach it directly to the turbo. What I did , and it seems to have worked very well, is to remove the stock air box and attach the hose from the turbo diectly to the filter. Pressure from the hose holds it up against the fender and it stays there very nicely. I did find it neccessary to replace the clamp that held the hose onto the original air box with a 5 " stainless steel hose clamp because the original clamp would not snug down tight enough to attach hose and filter togeather. I have not done a lot of power runs with it yet and I don't tow anything but so far it seems to have dropped EGT's significantly. So far I haven't seen any temps over 900 to 1000 Degrees pre-turbo. Have yet to take it out on the interstate to really push it yet but in the past I have seen 1300 degrees easily. At the same time I added the filter I also advanced the timing so this may have had a contributing factor on EGT's as well.

Amsoil

I picked the Amsoil reusable foam filter due to the fact that it fits so much tighter than the K&N. It's worked well so far.

Air Filters???????

Max,

I've been observing the TDR for a few months and this is my first post. I have had K & N filters on all of my toys dating back to the mid 80's. I've learned the hard way about oiling them after cleaning. In this case less is more, less oil applied evenly and allowing it to flow out (capillary action) is the best way to avoid injesting oil. I'm not pointing fingers and don't want to fuel a fire I'm merely giving my opinion based on my experience. As you will see in my signature I have one installed on my truck, and I'm very happy with it. This is one modification that you can install and not fiddle with for quite awhile. Now repeat after me: I will not overclean my filter... I will not overclean my filter.

Eric :D :D :D

I know a lot of the guys run the K & N and swear by it, do it if your happy with it. My reason for not running a K & N is that it would seem to me you are pumping oiled air through the innercooler.

I run a stock filter but am in search or a PROPERLY priced BHAF due to the fact that the new plate. (#8) has increased the boost max. to just under 30 and the filter minder pulls down all the way to the "change filter" position. NAPA wants 50+ for the BHAF!

Has anybody come up with the required micron rating on air filters? Is 5 micron good enough?

Mike

'956Wheel,

I had over 100,000 miles on a K&N in the stock airbox. I cleaned and oiled it 3 times. Each time I would check the silencer ring and it was so dry it was actually starting to corrode!! I recently replaced it with a K&N 0880 behind a Jannety SS heat shield.

If you read and follow the instructions, the K&N is an excellent filter. Remember, Don't over oil.
