I'm sure this question has been asked four hundred gazillion times. I've done a search and am still curious.

What are ya'll running for air filters? The only addition is an EZ box and everything else is stock. I'd like to stay away from K&N because of the complaints/posts about the oil slinging into the engine etc.

Where do you get them from?

Thanks in advance. Sorry for dredging up a beat up topic.

I went from stock to a BHAF and dropped some EGTs and smoke and then went to a AFE 20-40044 which fits right into your turbo hose for more smoke and EGT control. when I say dropped EGTs I mean the rise was slowed down a noticable amount but it still went up but it let me stay on the throttle longer before critical heat levels arrived.

Is the AFE 20-40044 just a drop in filter or the whole assembly thingie? I would like to keep my current box without cutting it or doing too terribly much to it. Is the 20-40044 the same number for a 2001. 5?

Thanks.

I put in an afe mega cannon and love it. Air flow isn't restricted and its got that cool soundin whistle.

It takes about 15 or 20 minutes to put on. Just curious though, why do you want to stay with the stock air box.

I also have to wonder why you want to keep the stock box? Take it out and let your cat play with it, ABHAF will do wonders for your truck.

cheers, Kevin

I tried the K&N RE0880 I liked it until I took a three hour ride. The noise from the turbo gave me a headache. Changed over to the BHAF. Made just enough difference on the high end of the turbo whine that I look forward to long runs. Oh ya, The straight pipe really makes music now.

I guess I want to keep the stock air box because I am a weenie. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the ease and simplicity of these different air filters. What do they require you to do to get them installed? Does the factory air box unscrew and got tossed? I've looked at the Afe Mega Cannon and kinda like the looks of it. The BHAF is intruiging as well. What are the pros / cons of either?

If the Afe or BHAF just lays where the stock airbox went, that's cool, I'll do it.

Thanks.

Toby

The BHAF is very easy. Remove the airbox--just loosen the hose and then pull it out of the truck... .

Put the BHAF onto the hose and tighten...

It will lay right where the box was... .

Some get a little fancier, but that is all it takes... .

Air Filter Choices

PHX ATC: Give your Amsoil Rep a call. I use the Amsoil 2 stage Foam filter, and it's filtration ability surpasses K&N without giving up particle micron power and CFM flow volume. :D

I will.

WHO's my Amsoil Rep near Phoenix, AZ???????? Anybody?

Let's talk. I'm trying to get all the info before I splurge. Oo.

If you are keeping the stock air box, the Western Diesel foam filter elements help to flow more air and catch more dirt than gauze filters. If your willing to change the air box, the aFe Magnum intake seems to work well.

I was giving the beast a bath today and pried open the hood to marvel in amazement at the product that lies beneath. I looked at my airbox and wouldn't have heartburn letting it go. I think my bigger concern is leaving the filter in the stock location. The box can go. Would the AFE cannon thing work in the stock location?

My cats are too prissy to play with such a dirty object. My dog on the other hand... ... ...

PHX, I was always amazed looking at my stock filter box. It seemed so small and out of place under there. And just that one small opening didn't make much sense to me.

The AFE unit will bolt directly to the studs that hold down the stock airbox. Other than that, its just hook up the hose and go. Even the BHAF is as easy. They are all easy. Its the easiest thing you can do next to dumping performance formula in your tank. If you can loosen a 10mm bolt and turn a screw on a clamp, you can do this. Keep the stock box. If you ever want to sell or something, reinstall it.

I recently went to the Fleetguard BHAF with a turbo shield (thanks OldMan). I want an AFE or K&N system for Christmas (I really want a Red Ryder 200 shot range model air rifle with a compass in the stock but Amy said I'd shoot my eye out) so I have to see if Santa comes through. Otherwise, I'm totally content with the performance of the BHAF and its cool sound.

AFE

I just installed an Afe Mega Cannon today! If you like turbo whistle, you will love the AFE, not to mention the increased air flow.
