Hello, Welcome. We do not need a air/ fuel gauge for diesels. They are for gassers. You cant ever have TOO much fuel on a diesel ( thats why we dont need em) BTW, DONT YELL :)

I'll bite. Even though I'm a total newbie, I have learned a bit from reading.

In the diesel, the intake stroke pulls in air only. The fuel burst(s)is injected toward the top of the compression stroke. The injector meters the fuel based on various inputs (I'm guessing TPS, engine load, RPM, etc. ). The ignition of the compressed air/fuel is due to the heating of the air under compression. Since the combustion isn't from a spark, we don't have to worry about the optimal 14/1 air/fuel ratio to produce optimal ignition/burn.

How'd I do?

That's not true. Diesels can have a very high air/fuel ratio ("lean" in gasser terms) and not damage the engine at all... in fact... . diesels will run lean for their whole life and not hurt anything.

Too much fuel with a diesel is bad... . The most obvious indication of having too much fuel is high EGT's... not to mention the black smoke coming out the tailpipe. Gassers smoke too... . if they're running rich...

EGT is a much better indication of air/fuel ratio (amongst other things... ) on a diesel. Not to mention that the traditional oxygen sensor used on a gasser to measure air/fuel ratio would get clogged in no time with a diesel..... and it would be reading WAY lean on a diesel almost all the time.

Over fueling

If you run to much fuel(lots and lots) you also push half burned fuel into the motor

oil and makes it thick and not good for the

lower end of motor IMHO GWD:--)
