Air Horns for pick-up

I pull a big travel trailer and I would like to install an air horn on my truck, so that if I see anyone pulling out in front of me I want them to know I am around. Can anyone suggest a good air horn that will do the job for me (Brand Name etc) How many decibels should I shoot for the louder the better if its reasonable and easy to install. I want to be heard when i use it. Any information will be appreciated.

well if you want loud and expense isnt an option i would go with the grover... i have hadley dual horns and i love them... i mounted them under the hood of my truck so they really catch peoples attention... i bought the whole kit for about 350 bucks. . well worth the money in my opinion!

I've got a single 24" Grover that I'm about to swap for set of 30" ers from a buddy. I don't have anywhere near $350 in my setup though.



$20 horn from big rig bone yard

$30 for 1/2 gal. air tank on Ebay (didn't realize what a rip off that was at the time)

(($10 2 gal. tank waiting to go on... ebay ))

$45 for small 12V air compressor on Ebay

$18 for electric valve from Rickson Truck Acc.

$20 in 1/4" line and misc. connectors.



You can get a horn, comp. , & tank all right off ebay. Your local Napa will have the air hose & connectors. Rickson Truck accessories for the elec. valve

parts store air horns

My son just installed a pair of horns form the local auto store, under $50. He says people take notice when he lays it on them, a shrill sound vs. deep sound. Easy to hook up as well. I saw a little larger pair that I might use. Trumpets ( plastic)are a little longer.

Chris, Im running a 30" grover with a quick fill on my tank (mounted outside the frame) but I do have a small 12v 120lb air-compressor in my toolbox (not in at the time so its on quick fill. and it lasts awhile) see pics my photos for more. you'll like it!!!

Put a set of "Hadley Bully Electric Solenoid Activated" horns on mine. Came from www.campingworld.com It is what goes on the RV's. 125dB, 135psi 12-volt compressor, 20' air hose, air tank w/25' hose and a dash switch. Item #3915. $199. 99 for non-club members or $179. 99 for members. If you order, be sure the order the mounting bracket, item #5101. Mounted on cross member under the radiator on the 2nd Gen.

The only way to get the "big rig" sound is to use "big rig" air horns. You can find them on eBay.



If you look at my "Readers Rig" gallery, you will see how I installed mine. I have two Freightliner air horns (24" and 26") mounted underneath along the rocker panels/frame. I don't use them too much as they are loud enough to wake the dead...

You can go "cheap" or go "real" you choose. REAL will cost more then cheap. Hadleys/Grovers and on-board air. Ain't cheap, but damned well worth it if looking for real air/train horns Money talks BS walks. I love my onboard air and Grovers... Even with the danged air leak I have. TOOT TOOT Get the heck outta my way!

Tom... I've put air horns on serveral vehicles, including two CTD's, and if your fittings are tight, the usual place for an air leak is back through the pump, or at the air solenoid. You can install a checkvalve at the air pump which will usually fix that problem. The air solenoid is another issue. They have a tendency to leak. Use soap/water to check there. You will always get some air loss somewhere, but my pump doesn't come on more then once or twice a month, unless I use the horn...

I know where the leak is... just too dang cold to play with it now. I'm planning to switch to a metal airline in the spring anyway so I ain't losing any sleep over the leak.

not sure what mine is, but it came off the top of a big rig (free). it barely fits between the frame rails under the radiator.



5 gal air tank (no pump yet) with a schrader valve for filling it from the home compressor. Pump is in the works as I plan on pneumatic tool capability soon.



it's loud enough to make people jump, that's for sure.

When Im driving a semi I have not been able to pass a gulf course in years whithout scopeing out a gulfer, mid back swing and laying on the horns for all they have. Some think its funny ,some give me half a peace sign. I know I should stop . Iv tried but the urge just overwelms me. Otis

another good one was when I first put on my train horns. a couple of young ladies came out of a store and started across the street to the parking lot. I was going to stop and let them cross but they just kinda walked first and looked second. seeing a chance for some fun I told my buddy to watch. I let go with the horns pretty good... ... ... ... it was just like a cartoon. they turned and hugged each other and just jumped up and down screaming. :-laf :-laf :-laf

They say 152db. I may pick up a set to see how loud they really are, but when I want someone to know I'm around and they can't pick up the huge white loud diesel truck, 152db should get the job done.

i have a compresser for the air bagson the truck. is there any way i could use it for a set of horns also. maybe a three way valve?

Thanks for the information. How did you mount them under the hood? Did you have to bore any holes in the hood? Where can I find information on the Handley Horns? Is this installation a tight fit under the hood?
