Am wanting to do something with my air-intake other than stock or a Scotty system. Any of you gentlemen ever cut a NASA duct in your hood for some fresh, cold air? Am wondering how to plumb this without risking rain water intrusion. Thanks, guys!

Sounds like the bulldog hood. Easier and cheaper than doing it yourself (with better results) but hey, what fun is that?

Keep your eyes on the air bulldog site... they are developing a ram air system that tgets the air from the factory air dam... sounds interesting!

I went ahead after months of deliberating whether to get the psychotty air or not and I am totally satisfied with my purchase. I am a hard customer to satisfy and am very set in my ways concerning BOMBing vs. why things are the way they are. The sound is intense, sounds like a 747 at full thrust. EGTs came down a little, boost needle still pegs the gauge at 50.

Mr. Hanson et al... please be careful to NOT use an air intake that originates low on the vehicle (like the air dam). There are several reasons for this, a couple of which are: accidental water intake is much more likely, from a performance standpoint, the motor wants cool air, right? So, why would you modify the system to suck air down next to the hot pavement? Duh! Have seen lots of these Jap low-riders with the fancy-colored intakes on them... . sure seems dumb to me. I am looking for cool clean air up off the pavement. I like the Psychotty unit, but there is always a better mousetrap!

BCFAST... thanks for the advice, but I will look it over carefully prior to a purchase. At least I hope I would! I do have faith in their designs, tho, since two of my good friends own their hoods and I have seen how those perform. We get rain all the time, and neither guy has had a bit of trouble with the hood sucking in water.
I never really thought about the hot pavement aspect of it... I wonder what the temp difference is between say 12 inches above the pavement and 4 feet above the pavement. Might be interesting.

In doing trackside research on this, we have seen summertime track temps around 150'+ and ambient temps at 92'... so to answer your question, 60 degrees + difference between the 1 foot level and the 4 foot level. That's a ton of horsepower gained/lost!

Good point. Just look at most big trucks to see where the air is pulled in. Either via a snorkel behind the cab or on the sides as high as possible.

Also, I am wondering about the noise some owners notice from the Pyschotty. Are you running the silencer ring? I am and hardly notice any noise. I admit I am half deaf but this is starting to make me wonder?

I find it very hard to believe that the temp 1 ft above the asphalt is 150+ degrees. Yes maybe the asphalt was 150 degrees but not 1 ft above. If it was your ankles would burn.
just my 2 cents

How about air intake using the openings by the fog lamps? Not much higher than the airdam but should be an improvement if the temp gradient falls that rapidly for each foot above the pavememt. The main obstacle routing a hose to the airbox is the battery on the passenger side. I plan to mount Optimas under the bed, and then set up a ram air intake from the bumper openings.

I have said since day 1, that if someone made a shaker hood, like the old Cuda's and Challengers had, I would put one on my truck. That would look awesome! A shaker buble popping out of the center of the hood with "Cummins ISB" in place of the "340 Cuda" and with the way the Cummins shakes it would be perfect.

Keep in mind BCFAST, the temp. disparity you reported (surface temp. -vs- temp. elevated 4') applies to asphalt not concrete. Although, concrete absorbs and retains heat, it would have nowhere near the thermal disparity that asphalt exhibits.

This is one of the reasons Doug Hofeldt designed the Air Bulldog induction hood to take the intake air from the best possible location on a Ram... . the high pressure, leading edge area of the hood. Nothing but #ad

Vaughn position of fog lamps are still to low. Water from high puddles or back wash from vehilce in front could/would go right up air intake tunnel.
I have had it happen on 1 ton Ford Van, ran like crud until all the water went through system. I took the connection off the air filter so it would never happen again.
Better idea get it higherto get fresh/cooler air.
The weather gurus take the official tempature four feet off the ground and in the shade.

Another added bonus of the Psychotty Air Induction System is the Deer Factor. Up around Auto Wurks Diesel is deer country these days due to an overpopulation of deer. As I approach them now with the Psychotty, they run like bandits far from the side of the road. Before, they'd just stand there and gaze at me as I went by. It may just be coincidence, but if it works I don't question it.

DieselB59,

Maybe it's a whistle effect like those little deer sirens that can't be scientifically proven to work. I think they do.

I like the Cuda or Transam Shaker hood Idea. . If Bulldog will build one I Will BUY!!!

John - concrete can also be pretty hot that close to the deck. We've seen temps on the concrete ramp (on the flightline) at around 130F with the temp in the high 90s to low hundreds. Not quite as bad as asphalt, but still pretty hot and therefore low density air. The cooler you start, the more air molecules you start with to compress then stuff into the engine and therefore the higher the efficiency.
