ASA Modifieds

About $200

I ordered one last week and it's getting installed tonight :)

Mad Max thanks for your feed back. That is just what I have been looking for.

I will get one ordered tomorrow. Looks like the installation shouldn't be too hard for an old shade tree mechanic like me. I am just North of you in Longmont.

Thanks Ken

Does rain/water affect this filter in the position of the ASA filter setup? Or what happens when water hits the filter?

Is the turbo whistle any louder? Can you use like an AFE pre-filter on top of the is filter? Anyone who buys let us know and as to mileage increase & if EGT's drop any. thanks JC.

I have one ASA and another like set-up from the Bluebird bus Cummins "B" apllication. I use the aFe Pro-Guard 7 on each along with the pre filter.

Water runs off the pre filter and the turbo whistle is nearly as loud as the exhaust @ both low and high boost levels.

I would suspec that the best set up would be to use the OEM filter housing with an aFe element. Modify the 4" rubber accordian intake tube to a steel tube (exhaust pipe) and modify the air inlet plenum to the OEM filter housing. Thus pulling in cool outside air. Not as much whistle though but we need all the EGT reduction one can possibly muster.

I see the old smokey mount and the like as something that gets in the way of storage jack removal... ... . no? Beside, they pull in under hood air just like the BHAF and the aFe coupled to an ASA modified.

You can suck lots of water into a diesel's air intake and it won't hurt anything.

Think of water/meth... also think of following a tractor trailer on a very rainy day... . no way you are not sucking in water... . no matter what your intake system is.

We also use copious amounts of water and soapy water to spray into the turbo intake to clean out the aftercoolers on marine diesels... done it several times. Gets all the oily residue out (the cold sea water makes the oily mist condense and stick to the aftercooler).

Greanleaf... I just put my AFE into my stock airbox (I forget which number it is, but it's the one you told me to get... ). It's a stretch to get it over the "mouth" on the inside of the cover that transitions into the accordion tube, and doesn't overlap a lot, but there is enough room for the hose clamp, and seems to be staying for now. No noticable difference in EGT's over the dirty K&N that was in there. I may replace the accordion to the stock airbox with the steel exhaust tube and rubber 45, but I need a 4"x4. 5" rubber connector.

After that, it looks like I could cut a 2" hole low in the front of the stock air filter housing, and put a short piece of ABS through under the headlight bracket for more cold air intake. I'm kind of a cold air fanatic, but would be interested in anyone reporting a difference in temps using an unshrouded filter (ala ASA), vs shrouded/optimized like the stocker.

JLEONARD, my Dad drowned his out two years ago trying to cross a creek, but the water was almost over the hood. Definitely too much...

Sam, I have searched PDR's site and still do not see your intake on there! That has to hurt sales, just my . 02 but I would at least say something to them. I have seen several people ask on here lately, they'll find the DIY How-To before they find the PDR availability...

I agree. Before I joined TDR I had done many searches on google for a intake for my truck. During those searches, I remember going to PDR's website and moving on after seeing no listing for a 1st gen intake. Of course, after I joined TDR I realized that they do in fact sell intakes for my truck. I'd suggest throwing a few intakes on Ebay as well. There are NO intakes for 1st gens listed on there either - I know because I always looked there until I found my ASA :)
