I have seen a lot of he cold air intakes that manufacturers make for import cars. I also see a lot of people have listed on their modifications "opened airbox" .

I was wondering if this means someone has just clamped on like a big K&N filter and taken the airbox off or are they making custom piping for the intake. I am interested the way to make the most power while not harming my truck.

TrqMonster (love the handle),

The only drawback I can see in our factory set up is the tiny air inlet from under the headlight to the airbox. My truck didnt come with one, so I have a piece of cardboard stuck along the left side of teh aribox that kind of blocks the airbox off from the rest of the underhood area, forcing it to suck in colder air from under the light. Overall, our intake set up is better than any inport car mfg, and better than even the 2nd genners. Bigger filter, big canister for it to fit into, big hose from airbox to turbo. If you are real worried about it, might consider an Old Smoky mount, though you'd have to get a BHAF, I think, or at least a K&N/ aFe.

If you don't mind do a little cutting, that little hole under the headlight can be enlarged to about 4 times its size without impacting the integrity of the rad support. There is room to weld or bolt a stiffener around the outside if one desires. There is a stamped aread with a fold that you can cut around that should still keep things together. If a person wants to do some metal fabbing an air intake could be setup that opens under the bumper and force feeds the air at higher speeds. Should help keep cooler air to the filter and help with the underhood heat also. Add to that a BHAF filter and an Outerwears cover and that should provide sufficient air for lots of bombs. I took the air box out and cut three large sections out of it to also help the intake air. Some like to drill lots of holes and that will work also.

Yes, The factory air system is weak once you bomb your truck.

If you are looking for something similar to the 2nd gen mega cannon as far as good looks/ large filter and pulls cold air, than I would contact SamsRam or PDR for a ASA Modified air intake. I have been working with Sam for awhile and we carry his intake system with a different filter. We use the AFE filter instead of the K&N because of the size and filtration.

The ASA intake makes the turbo really sing. :D

Bombs? ASA?

I am fairly new to the diesel community so I am not familiar with the term "BOMB", if some one could tell me it would be greatly appreciated. Also the ASA intake sounds interesting, where do I look to find them?

Thanks to everyone for all the help

Yeah, Swiss cheesing the stock airbox seems to help some

That's what I have done but I prefer to call it "enhancing the flow".

I cut several 2 1/2 inch holes to increase the amount of air going into the K & N filter element.

I chose 2 1/2 inch diameter for a very scientific reason... . that was the largest hole saw I had.

Anyway, works for me and my engine is not starving for air... ... ... .....

ASA intake

I've been really happy with the ASA intake system with the k&n filter, I'm also running an outer filter to. It helped out a lot, look at sig. alonzo

Trq Monster, I am in the middle of getting my new filter installed, but I am using an afe cannon only, like what is on my 02. I am just going to get a 4. 5 inch plastic or steel pipe and attach the tube with the filter end, and mount under the hood. My only concern is if I would get any water into the system, still in the R&D on that but... ... I love it on my 02, also increased the mileage by a couple too just by letting her breathe. Sounds a lot better too.

more air

:) Hey buddy, here is what i did. I used aluminized dryer ducting and ran it from the drivers side radiator support (there is a hole there already) over the engine and dumps cold rammed air in front of the air cleaner. Just use some plastic plumbing parts that fit the hose and attach with screws. Zip tie the hose and close the hood and it will form to the space. Now, in the summer like now, I'm running the bhaf by just hanging it there with a big hose clamp supporting it in the fender. For winter and rain, I'll put my cheesed box K@N back in place, however i ran a screen mesh around the box because of tree critters building nests in spaces they can invade. This truck runs cool, however, loaded with trailer and quads in the hills, stuck in traffic, I have to pay attention to the egts. I do tow in 5th! So far, so good, if it fails, in goes the nv4500, but will still tow in 5th! Sorry so long. Tim
