2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission airbag clockspring recall

Anyone had the 2001 steering wheel airbag clockspring replaced with the DC recall? My airbag warning light hasn't come on, so I know I haven't broken the spring... yet. I called the dealer to ask about this fix and he says the steering has to come off the steering column. I'm thinking big mistake about to happen when I let the dealer touch my truck and remove the wheel. Any comments from others who have had this done? Did you yank on the steering wheel prior to driving home?

:-{} yep... . I think I was one of, if not the first to post about this when mine went out and the local dealer fixed under warranty. Listed the problem as "clockspring", and I posted here to ask what the !@#$ a clockspring was, and then everyone started posting about getting their recall notices, and I also got one later.

The clockspring on my '01. 5 went at around 20K miles. My dealer installed a new one in ~30 minutes. Everything works, and you can't tell the wheel has ever been off - I don't think this is at all challenging for any remotely competent tech.

On the subject of clocksprings, I got a recall notice for the wife's '98 Caravan last week. The recall said to bring the vehicle in IF the spring breaks. Hers is still hanging in there with a little over 100K miles.

I'd recommend you do this one. In addition to your air bag not working, your cruise control will cease to function. The truck remains drivable, but I'd rather get it fixed on MY schedule.

and if you have the SLT + you will loose the steering wheel controls [wich are a waste IMHO. . ya forget they are there]

My new truck has these, But it took me a couple minutes to find them when I did the first test drive on monday night. I travel with the camper alot, and am always screwing with the radio stations, I can see this will be a nice feature.

Is the recall on 2002 as well or isn't it in the recall?

Where are the specifics on this recall? Somewhere on TDR I'm sure I just am too lazy to root around and find them.

Check your tilt steering after the fix. Had mine shut off the motor at 55mph which freaked me out. Not sure if it was related but I never had that problem prior to the fix.

I found my recall notice buried under some papers on my desk. If you want a copy, pm me and I can fax it to you.

The recall basically says that 'some 2000 Dakota's and some 2000 and 2001 model year Ram trucks have defective clocksprings'. In addition to describing the symptoms of a broken spring, and the possible safety ramifications (no airbag), the recall notice goes on to say that DC will replace the spring free of charge, and also talks about how to obtain reimbresement if you have already paid to have the clockspring replaced.
