Last night I hit a deer, it adjsuted my bumper back about one inch. I'm not going to fix it, because you can't hardly see it unless you look really close.

The question I had was that the airbag didn't go off, obvioiusly it wasn't a hard enough impact. What type of sensor triggers the airbag? Is it a mechanical contact type, i. e. if the bumper moves so far back it goes off, or is it some type if inertial sensor that senses rapid deceleration?

I just want to make sure that the airbag will work if I need it.....

There are three inertia sensors that have to meet certain criteria for the bag to go off, direction and rate of speed decrease are the main ones. Any deer I've hit didn't really slow me down rapidly at all.

Insurance adjuster I talked to said that these Dodge trucks have the least sensitive airbag systems of any vehicle he's encountered.

Thanks Illflem-

I figured it was an interial sensor, but I wanted to make sure.

Just wish they made the bumpers a little heavier - but from the sounds of things you probably wish the same thing!
