Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Airbox Construction

Just a question, has anybody made any modifications to the airbox? I know a lot of you are running the aFe boxes and the like, but it seems like all these are using just a cone style filter in a slightly more open box. I have upgraded to a 4" exhaust and am wanting to free up the intake a little. Please set me straight on what the differences are and let me know if it is best to just buy an aftermarket kit or worth the time to mess with fabrication. Thanks!

put a BHAF on it! all you have to do is remove the stock air box and the filter goes right on the end of the intake tube... its very simple and takes about 5 mintues to do!. . im sure some guys will chime in with some pictures and part numbers for ya! Oo.

If you want to keep the stock air box, remove the snorkle (on the left side of box, connecting it to the fender) and drill some additional 3" holes in the bottom with a hole saw. You could also go with a BHAF (do a search for the NAPA part number), or go with an intake setup, such as an AFE. I purchased an AFE intake setup from Mass Diesel. I love it, and it sounds great.

What is a BHAF? Is it a cone filter? Tried to do a search, but came up with all sorts of different stuff.

I modified my stock airbox before I bought my AFE. I took a hole saw and drilled a series of holes in the front side of the box. (facing the headlights) I then bought a piece of bug netting and layered it three or four times. I took some small nuts and bolts with 1 inch washers to secure the netting over the holes. I installed the netting inside the box. The netting kept any materials or bugs out of the air box while driving. The holes were actually visible if you looked between the headlight and the radiator. This set up worked well for me and had minimal cost. :-laf
