Mike you got it exactly right. I drove 60 miles to take my daughter to the airport this morning outside temp was in the low 20s,my intake temp was 50-55° the entire way. On the way back I covered the intercooler ¾ of the way with cardboard, intake temp went up to 78-84°,water temp stayed the same although the heater worked better. I didn't measure mpgs but the truck definitely had more pep on the way back. I pulled the cardboard 8 miles from home and the intake temp dropped back down to the low 50s within one minute and stayed there,it felt like I lost some power also. All of this was with a Lund winter front on,I'm beginning to think that the Lund doesn't block enough airflow, need to take it off for the next leg of my experiment and see. I'm also going to block the fender intake hole and removing my psuedo Pyscotty hose so that the intake air comes from under the hood. I also have another sender and switch position on my AT temp gauge,I will put the sender in the airbox to see what the temps are there.
All of this is just for fun you know,my truck ran fine year round when stock,I just like to try to make things better and taking measurements helps reinforce the seat of the pants feeling.
