Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) AirDog install question

I am installing an AirDog FP100. I have decided to remove my OEM fuel filter and Lift pump to make more room.



Can I remove the bracket that held the old LP? (See pic)



Or does this plate cover something critical?

Glad you asked, as I just made this mistake.

The bracket does cover a hole in the block, it appears to be a spot to mount a mechanical fuel pump. I learned the hard way, by taking it off and ripping the gasket in the process. I just cut the L portion off and put it back on.

Whew... Glad I asked! the quantity of bolts holding it on made me feel that there may be more to it...
