AirHorns for the Holidays

Hey out there fellow turboheads! My wife really wants airhorns for the truck for Xmas, and I have looked into Grover products at some detail, but I don't know if they are the best and/or most reliable. Do any of you have airhorns? If so, I would really appreciate the advice.
Also, my buddy has a 2000 F250 PSD and wants to hook 'em up for a little pulling contest. No BOMBing as of yet, but with differences in low-end torque, what kind of money should I throw down?=:0)

I have the Hadleys and luv 'em. I mounted the horns behind right front bumper, the compressor where the stock horns were, mounted stock horns on grill vertical brace and mounted the air tank to my air box (between the airbox and turbo). Installation took me about six hours. Most of the time spent figuring where to put everything. Only had to drill one hole in the airbox for the tank.

Get the Hadley Bully's! You'll be happy you did. I have them and Papa Joe has Grovers. The Grovers sound more like a Big Rig, but the Hadleys are louder and more shrill. The Grovers quality is not that of the Hadleys. Many TDR members have commented on problems with the Grovers. Do a search under Grover, Hadley and Air horns in the "Parts/Accessories" Forum. You will get a lot of info.

Some of the features I like about the Bully's are, the tank comes with a hookup including air hose for auxillary air for filling air mattresses, intertubes etc, a switch that is inline with you factory horns incase you want to turn off the Hadleys for some reason or another, (I haven't turn mine off yet and don't intend to), pressure gauge on tank, and after installation NO LEAKS!

Thanks for the input guys--Big Bob I will definitely call regarding the Hadley Bully's, but can I mount those under the hood? My wife wants to be kind of inconspicuous and not advertise the airhorns. With all of the stuff she wants to add on to the truck, I'm starting to wonder if I'm getting myself into trouble--she can get kind of crazy when it comes to our truck and the way she drives it!!
JNutter, as far as I know my friend's Ford PowerJoke is stock like my Dodge. He has all terrain tires and an auto transmission like me. I have the all terrain Michelin tires without any aftermarket additions.

I was at the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas a few weeks ago and saw another air horn vendor. www.goairhorns.com sells plastic (that's right) horns for big rigs. They say that the plastic resonates too so you get more of an omni-directional sound. The new Kenworths are using these, I think. They are light, won't corrode, and you can mount them any way you like. I haven't heard then though. Has anyone had the opportunity to hear these horns that can comment on their quality and sound?

Check out this link. This is how I mounted my Bully's. I mounted them off the crossmember underneath the truck behind the raditor, they are protected by the air dam under the front bumper. Nobody can see them, but the can sure HEAR them!

My brother works as a diesel mechanic at an open pit gold mine in Nevada. He has a new Suburban he mounted some cheapo air horns or. No storage tank, just instant on compressor. He says the horns to get are the ones for the Cat Off Road Haul Trucks, you know the several hundred ton capacity. Says he can get them from the Cat dealer for about $70, and he is going to put some on the Suburban. You would need a separate air compressor, but one like Fritz has one his page could be useful for more than running the horn.

Thanks again guys for all of the helpful input--Big Bob, thanks for recommending J. C. Whitney CO. for the purchase site--everyone else (including Hadley Products) wanted at least three bills for just the kit. I didn't realize it but Hadley is located about 20 minutes from my house here in Grand Rapids, MI. The guy I talked to on the phone, I won't state his name to protect him, was real helpful and recommended I looked somewhere else to buy their products due to their high prices from buying direct. J. C. Whitney is selling the Bully kit right now for $209. 95 plus S&H depending on which state you reside.
As far as installation is concerned, I think I will take your advice Big Bob on where to mount the horns, but I don't want to have to remove my air filter housing inorder to install the compressor tank. So, I'll have to find an alternative location. Again, thanks for everyone's input and happy holiday's!

I have Hadley Bullys'. I found that mounting that air tank on the brace for the left fender (right behind the headlight) was a snap. All you have to do is remove the mounting hardware, drill one hole (there is already one hole in the bracket) and put the bracket back in and bolt down the tank. I then mounted the compressor on the horizontal plate right below the battery.

The price is right from JC Whitney, may have to get myself an early Christmas present.
Can you guys go into a little detail regarding wiring the horns up? Do you have to install a seperate horn button or can you wire them into your OEM horn? If so how is this done?
I hve "0" knowledge of ANYTHING electrical!

If you don't feel comfortable working on the horn installation yourself, I am sure there are others TDR memebers (with the air horns) in your area that would be willing to give you a hand.

As far as my wiring, I connected the 12volts for the compressor from a switched source. Prevents the compressor from running with the key off.

As far as the horn, Hadley has you connect to one of the factory horns to activate the air horns. That way they both work together and you have the OEM horns if you run out of air. There is also a switch that is supplied (with the Bully's) if you want to switch off the air horns. I have never had a reason to turn them off. The only exception is, I was told air horns are illegal in some cities if they are mounted out of sight.

Just thought I would chime in to support Grovers mine have worked fine for over a year, and I'm not afraid to use the either!! But there's nothing wrong with the Hadleys either I hate to say it but I will for my fellow TDR members the Hadley compressor looks better. If my Grover compressor takes a dive I am going to replace it with a Firestone compressor that comes with there air bag setup it's a nice piece.

I haven't heard the Hadleys, but I've nearly fininshed installing a set of Grovers and they sound reeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaal good. After looking at the compressors and air tanks that come with the Grovers and Hadleys, I decided to piece together a system instead of buying a complete kit. That being the case, I mounted a Thomas (2. 2 CFM) compressor up with a SCUBA tank and some 300 psi rated air line. There are quick connect fittings and ball valves in various locations for attaching air tools or other attachments. For firing a few "sound rounds", I attached a micro switch on the shifter where the thumb can press it. This way there is nothing altered on the OEM horns, but during traffic (when the hand is on the shift knob already) it just requires a quick flick of the thumb.

This project seemed to grow a budget of it's own, but it rocks!

Look at it this way, if your wife wants air horns, you must be doing things right, so just keep going!
