I installed the airtex lift pupmp om my 98. 5. When I turn on the key it does nothing and when I bump the starter in only runs for about three seconds. Is this normal my stock lp ran for about 12 seconds. i have not yet checked it with a gauge.

When I turn the key on I hear the pump kick on for just a little bit and the guage jumps and then bleeds back down to 0. Bumping the starter makes it run comparably to the stock pump. So I would say that it is not normal.

Mike,

You might try disconnecting the wiring harness leading to the pump then hook up a voltmeter to the harness contacts to verify voltage is briefly present (2 seconds I believe) when you turn the ignition key on, and voltage is on for a full 25 seconds when the starter is bumped.

I did this with a test light there is no voltage when the key is turned on and only voltage for three seconds when the starter is bumped.

In the fuse box under the hood, there is a relay for the lift pump. Swap it out with one of the less important circuits(fog light, etc) you might have a bad relay.

Mike,

You've eliminated the Airtex pump as the problem. Like Sam suggested, the next step would be to try a different relay to see if that helps.

Keep us posted.

BINGO it was a bad relay. I thought about checking that before but i fiqured the relay was open or closed. Thanks for the help
