Steering Box Failure? Something Else?

Happened to one of our welding trucks. He was driving down the hiway at 120km/hr, pulled into a side pull out to deal with emails etc. when he put it into drive, the truck wouldn’t move. Absolutely no warning, no vibrations or anything prior to pulling in to stop.
It’s a miracle it happened this was and not while driving at speed.
It’s obvious that lots have been broken for a while and held in by the hub cap.

2017 with 5700 miles. Only the dealer had touched it. Or maybe whoever they had install the B/W gooseneck also.

I had just driven 35 miles, some off that on interstate. Parked on a residential street, 10 minutes later noticed the lug cover cap was gone. Got closer a saw all but 1 lug were gone!!!

I've seen first hand a couple of Rams on the side of I-10 with one dual missing and the other barely hanging on...this is a real problem!

meh we had tires fall off and almost fall off a couple ford duallys. also seen tires off random fords. all my monies on operator error. either by the tire shops or owners them selfs

Just an FYI for you dually guys. In '21 Ram did an upgrade to the 3500 HO dually axle. 2.5" threaded spindle v/s 2" and 12 bolt axle flange v/s 8 bolt. It would obviously include a larger hub overall. I think the wheel studs stayed the same.

Interesting that the change occurred in 21 and not 19.

I was also told last week that the 12.0” R&P is the same SRW and DRW, where in 13-18 the SRW and DRW HO’s used different carriers with the DRW having more ring gear bolts.

Yes, I noticed this on my 2023 over my 2018. The new hub is about 5 1/2” in diameter over the 2018’s being about 4 1/2” ish(didn’t measure it) This should equate to bigger bearings too. Nice upgrade for capacity and durability I’d hope.

EXACTLY, figured I would see if anyone remembered my fiasco. I knew you would Stan.

For those that don't know I had a small leak more like seeping between the front and rear sections. It was fixed but by not standing it on end it had a catastrophic failure. One covid month later I was back on my venture to SoCal for the winter.

I believe I remember reading your post when that happened, but could you shed some light on that situation for me? I remember someone had to replace an Aisin, because of a casting or machining defect by the MFG that caused a leak from the top vent, but that may have been a different person. What was the cause of the failure you had?
