Those are called E-Torx. Shortened for External Torx.

Very few people have them in their toolbox. They are somewhat specialty. I got mine from the Snap-Off ice cream truck a long time ago....

I believe the Horror Fright has those... not sure on the sizes or quality though. Go Googling for me. lol

Getting more common nowadays. Good to have a set in the toolbox.
First time seen that in my 98 GC inside the rear differential, the pin to lock the carrier is in e-torx.

12 spline sockets work on E-Torx. This is a good compromise as they will fit many fasteners. They'll fit hex, square, E-Torx and more. IMO, these would be a better investment with what they'll work with. Have used mine with fasteners that have just started to round.

Yeah harbor freight had them. got pulled of and drained. Minimal metal on butt plug. painted the cover black and will polish the the fins for extra cooling. Post a pic when done. Oh yeah anyone have torque spec?

You painted the aluminum rear diff ??????
Then you polished off the paint on the fins for “EXTRA” cooling??????

10-4 copy that
Hwy 12v98 you like the cover?

Honest answer, it looks fine but the raw aluminum dissipates the heat better. Reality is the paint isn’t going to make or break the diff and wiping off the fin tips isn’t going to matter. Since you painted it IMHO you now need to paint the bolts and fill plug.
