aisin trans shutter

My 08 5500 4x4 4. 88 gears, shutters under a load (pulling 16k roughly) at somewhere in the 32- 40 mph range but doesn't do it all the time ( in tow/haul mode). The dealer of course (I'm the Sterling guy) can't verify and Asin said it's normal. I can't believe the shutter I'm getting is normal. The dealer has done updates although they can't verify and in opinion it has gotten worse. It has 52k on it, serviced the trans at 30k and did oil sample. The sample came back with abnormally high metal content and the dealer did a sample within 1500 miles of mine and said it was Ok. My warranty is up this month and I'm afraid I'm gonna get stuck with a high dollar trans rebuild. Has anyone had a concern such as mine?

Does the shutter take place at the time the TQ locks at 4th gear? If it is that is a transmission slippage.

I'm not sure ,and have wondered that for a long time. The trans shifts so smooth that I can't tell shift or lock up and it's not there all the time. It seems to happen when I'm not expecting so I can't tell which it is. that is why I can only give a speed range.

Easily solved. Watch your tackometer. It will change each time a gear changes. The torque management decreases when your transmission hits 4th gear and that is a likely the time it would slip. You are applying much more torque and HP at that change.

To me it feels more like a T/C shutter.

I have experienced precisely the same symptom with mine but I don't tow much like I used to and it only occurs randomly so I too have been unable to pinpoint road speed, gear, and engine rpm when it has happened.

The Aisin has a 180 mile warranty IIRC so I'm not worrying about it.

I think you need a new truck. My Aisin has a 180,000 mile warranty!! ha.

Ooops twice. One, I posted 180 miles not 180k miles and, more importantly, my warranty has already expired so if the shudder is a symptom of a problem or likely future failure it will be on my dime!

Oh well. It drives great, even when my 14k fiver is hanging on the hitch. If it fails in time I'll worry about it then.

The way fuel prices are going up the truck spends its day alone and ignored out in my barn with the odometer resting at current miles. It will never wear out or fail that way.

Do y'all think it's just a firm lockup. I just got back from May Madness. I ran mostly in double overdirve on the way out towing 17K Travel Surpreme and ran just tow/haul on the way back. I interpret the slight shudder drive line responding to firm shift. BTW, I got about 1mpg better towing in tow haul at about 2,500 rpms doinf 70 mph than double overdrive at 2,100 rpm. Ended up 7. 7mpg

Boy, I hear that!! We bought a 2007 VW convertible to drive while we were in Arizona this winter for just that reason. We are currently in Iowa for the summer and drive the VW nearly everyday. The truck gets used about once every couple of weeks. I LOVE driving my truck, but do NOT love $4. 09 diesel.

Putting the Aisin shudder issue in perspective, several of us have experienced the same symptom and although I don't know if he ever experiences the shudder, EB recently reported he has around 340k miles on his '07 Ram 3500 C&C that pulls a heavy flatbed gooseneck every day loaded with oilfield supplies and has never reported a problem of any kind with his Aisin automatic.

I don't think failure is imminent for any of us, even if fuel prices drop dramatically and we start spinning our odometers again.

I'm not quite to 340k yet, getting close, but not there yet. Yes, I've experienced the shutter if I am loaded heavy and really get on it. I don't push my truck real hard, I figure where ever I'm going will be there when I get there. I believe if there were some way to increase the line pressure, I also believe it is the torque converter, it would solve the shutter issue. I just take it easy and have had no problems with the transmission at all. I'm due a fluid change pretty quick, but looking at the fluid and smelling it, it looks just like it did when it was put in.



I'm having another issue right now, but I'll start different thread on it.
