Dumb question on 2020 RAM 12" axle

Bought my tuck used so I didn't get a manual with it. I know in my 01 in the manual it says that if the Transmission gets hot, pull over and pop the truck in neutral and bring the RPMs to about 1500 to run the transmission pump and thus cooling it down.

Is this the same case with an Aisin? I did this once and didn't notice much cool down. Or maybe the pump only runs in park?

Just curious for the event I ever run into this dilemma, I want to know what to do.

You should be able to download pdf of the manuals by creating an account on www.mopar.com. I didn't find any specific instructions other than locking it in first to prevent overheating.
I've seen those, I just want that original factory...

Ahh okay gotcha. I remember stopping to chat with a friend and popped my truck in neutral like I always did with my 01 to cool the transmission off but I saw temp go up which I would expect if I was driving and then put the truck in park and stopped getting airflow across the heat exchangers.

If you pulled over and put your 01 in park the trans fluid would not typically flow unless you had some mods done to your Trans.

Not the case with the new ones.

These are pretty overbuilt not thinking you will ever have issues, and they flow all the time.

What kind of stuff are you towing?

Did your Aisin actually get hot, or is this for educational purposes? Even pulling in 106* F the highest I think I have seen is 180-182. It's a stout bugger.

Sorry I may have written that wrong, I always popped the 01 in neutral because I knew that was where the pump would run and not run in park.

I don't tow things on a daily basis but just thinking about the what if.

Temps will go up in P, but only because the airflow over the cooler has decreased. Fluid still flows thru the cooler in P.

Dad bought his ‘17 new and it didn’t have a manual. They want you to download them.

Trans never got hot, strictly educational purposes. Curiosity got the best of me again.

I've never seen it over 172*

But what does drive me nuts is that the engine doesn't cool off while idling.

When I would be driving on the highway or something of the sort I always let my vehicles idle for a minute or two to cool off. This truck seems to warm up and do the opposite.. The 01 would drop down to 186/188 and I'd shut her down with EGTs below 325.

The Aisin circulates fluid in P and N
Roger that, I guess these trucks need alot more airflow than the older ones.. or I had a fan clutch that was sticky..

This new truck seems to do two things compared to the 01. This truck gets warmer idling, and keeps cool when towing heavy. As my 01 would cool down idling and get a little bit warm if I was heavy but really never got anything to be concerned about.

I know they design trucks to run at certain temperatures and it really seems like they have them dialed in to be in a certain range of temperatures at all different loads.

I wonder if I increased RPM to get the pump spinning faster and the fan spinning faster if it would drop temperature.

The manual thing drives me nuts. I know I have the manual in the 8.4" Uconnect but I like a physical manual.

I do have to admit, the amount of information on that touch screen is impressive. I love the screen that tells you all the #'s for lightbulbs.

Two big reasons for this. 1 is the EGR cooler adds more heat, but mainly it’s because the 6.7 block holds ~1.3 gallons less. Less fluid means higher temp for the same heat transfer.

I use fast idle after hard towing but it’s not as effective as on my 5.9, mainly due to the smaller cooling system.

I knew that EGR was doing that.. unfortunately.. putting sand back in my engine... lol

But the smaller cooling system I was unaware of, maybe they deemed it unnecessary with a more aggressive radiator/cool off procedure.

This isn’t a 6.0, don’t worry about sand.

If you look at part numbers and spec for an 07 5.9 and 6.7 you will see that everything is the same but the block/EGR cooler. The 6.7’s increased displacement reduced the room for coolant, but after 13 years I’d say it’s just fine.

Hahaha thats really funny you compare it to a 6.0. My friend that warns me about how bad EGR's are all the time, drives a 6.0.

Ahh okay, thats great. I do have to admit, it does keep extremely cool even with 13k behind it, (which is basically a kite also). Never saw over 203 for coolant or oil.

I do enjoy watching the thermostat open at like 197 and the temp drop down to 186 or 188 depending on outside temp.

I live at 215-217° for coolant on most grades, running 18-24-K GCW. On the flats I’m closer to 207°, which is where the thermostat goes full open. Then again so did my 05 before I reprogrammed the fan. The 18 just doesn’t cool off as fast at idle.

That's perfect, giving the truck a good workout. At 217, that fan is about ready to kick in, right? Where are you with regards to oil at that point?

Yeah that cooling off at idle thing, drives me nuts.

The oil temp is fake so I don’t even look at it.

Fan really gets going at 217°!
