Dumb question on 2020 RAM 12" axle

That's perfect, giving the truck a good workout. At 217, that fan is about ready to kick in, right? Where are you with regards to oil at that point?

Yeah that cooling off at idle thing, drives me nuts.

That Fan doesn't "Kick" in, it fades in just enough to keep the water temperature at the desired level.

And the Engine temperature stays high at idle to keep the emissions system happy and in working condition. There is no such thing like idle down on these new units.

And just to mention it, your Turbo is water cooled, so also absolutly no need to idle after a normal ride.

And after all, the truck itself checks all and everything itself, it will go into limp ot inform you as soon as someting is out of spec. Fools proof Truck today.

Watching fan rpms it does cycle by over 1000 rpms at a time with coolant temps from long grades. Sounds like a Cessna ready to takeoff.

Same thing with A/C, it will jump over 1000 rpms.

It not like the old clutch fans thou, as it is PWM controlled.

Bringing back an old thread, hoping for some more conversation on the topic as it was on my mind on my past trip to Maine.

Truck did fine, towing a small 7x12 enclosed trailer, ambient was anywhere from 70-74mph. Going down the interstate at about 68-73 most of the way. The truck never saw over 195 on coolant, or 204 on oil, even on some grades, but still nothing excessive, very impressed.

Where I'm not so impressed is how this truck does at slow speeds, and idling. I was doing some slow speed operation (under 10mph), up a small grade and whatnot and coolant quickly shot up to 208 REAL quick, then fan kicked on and right to about 1400rpms and cooled down rather quickly but I still can't believe how fast it went up.

I also notice when we stopped at a truck stop to use the rest room, I left the truck idling and coolant shot right up also to about 204.. I know these new trucks are designed for all this with the emissions BS, but it drives me nuts as I'm used to the 01 24v I had.

Through all this, I have learned a new trick if I ever find myself doing some more idling/slow speed, throw on the A/C and it keeps the Fan RPMs up and keeps the truck nice and cool the way I like it 188-192 on coolant.

Now I just wish Ram would have programming for that fan to start turning a little bit earlier than 208...

I'm sure if some parts fell off as well, the truck would run cooler....

The 6.7 block holds quite a bit less coolant than the 5.9 block and that’s the main reason for the temp spikes at low coolant flow.

It takes some getting used to, but it perfectly normal and fine.

Had a key receptacle issue with my '14 while on the road in WY. Only place I could find that could fit me in right away was a fleet service shop in northern CO. They fixed my issue pronto and gave the truck a once over. They found a loose caliper bolt in that process. The point is, they were very thorough and had expertise in dealing with Ram trucks that are used in duty/commercial applications almost exclusively. They noticed my transmission (RevMax 550) so we had that conversation. Mine stock 68RFE failed under warranty at 90k and then again at 125k. I pull an enclosed 8k lb bumper pull about 15% of the time. Anyway, the service manager told me they had done over 200 68RFE rebuilds/replacements AND NOT A SINGLE Aisin. They'd serviced Aisin's and done a converter on one. They said some of the trucks they see have well over 10k hrs on them. I wouldn't (and won't when my '20 arrives) worry about an Aisin.

Yeah I understand, it will take some getting used to, I was pondering the idea of the fleece coolant kit to aid in cooling to cylinders 5 and 6.

Let the engine management manage it. You will drive yourself crazy. If something is out of range, the truck will notify you.

Earl

Climbing a mountain pass, the worry is the traffic ahead and how YOU are going to get around it, and not if the truck can do it.

My 14 had a 68rfe and it would get hot towing in Stop and go over 215 . The Aiain never gets to 200 . They did increase the cooling on the 2019. Cummins did some major design changes that year . Time will tell if they were all positive .

215 is perfectly fine!!
It's also difficult comparing trucks 5 years apart. Efficiency, cooling systems, etc all improve with time.
Another variable is the Aisin fluid is conventional while ATF+4 has been synthetic for the last 20ish years and is capable of sustaining higher temperatures than the Aisin fluid.
