I would appreciate it if any of you have found a way around the horn honking when you set the alarm with the remote button on the key for your truck. It is annoying if you are around others or at night, and a person would rather not inform the world that you are locking and alarming your truck! Thank you, Stan Oo.

Stanmar,

It bugged me too. So I had my dealer reprogram my remote while in for service. After he did, he showed me how I could have done it myself. Look in your owner's manual index under "Remote Keyless Entry". Look in the section for a sub section called "To Unlock Doors". It should tell you how to reprogram the factory default "horn chirp feature". It's remarkably simple once you have the instructions. And it's reversible.

My 04 instructions go basically like this: get in vehicle, fasten seat belt, turn on ignition (do not start), press and hold the LOCK button on remote, between 4 & 10 seconds press and hold the UNLOCK button also, when a chime is heard release both. Remove key from ignition and press the LOCK button. You should have only directionals flashing now, no horn.

Be sure and read your 06 manual first... it may be different. Enjoy your new quiet security system. I do :)

Regards,

Joe

Hey Joe,

Thanks for the good information. I guess that I must have missed that in the owner manual. I thought that I looked it over pretty good, but don't remember seeing what you explained. I haven't posted before, but have seen lots of good tips and how to's from experienced owners like you. Thanks again, I'll let you know if it works like you say... ... ... Stan :p

The alarm also sets if you lock the door with the button on the door panel and close the door. I use this method at night. The horn blowing in the daytime lets me know I've actually locked the truck.

Careful..... you don't disarm the security alarm by depressing the door lock plunger. Doing this will lock the vehicle but not arm the alarm. To be sure your alarm is armed look on the instrument cluster for the blinking red light. If it doesn't start flashing right away, you could simply put your key in the door and twist to lock and arm.

At least that's how it works on my '04

Safe parking :)

Joe

P. S. Stanmar - If you run into a problem you need help with this forum is a gold mine. There is usually someone who has had your problem and resolved it before. The only question is whether they are reading the forum when you post. If the subject has been covered before a quick forum search will likely get you a solution to your dilemma. With the combined knowledge and experiences of those on this forum there are very few problems that will stump you for long. Post away ;) We all learn by reading new threads.

I guess I didn't make myself clear, I didn't mean the door lock plunger, I meant the switch on the armrest that locks all the doors. Then when you close the door the light flashes and you are armed. Sorry for the confusion...

Thanks All,

Just to let you know, I tried all the suggestions, including my owners manual. None of the things worked for me... ... ... . but, the suggestions got me thinking which made me look for the quick card that comes with all new 06 trucks. The quick card was different information than the owners manual, which in itself is confusing! Well, anyway the quick card said to stand out side the vehicle, press and hold the lock button for between 4-10 seconds but not longer than 10, then simultaneously hold down the panic button, then release both. Well that did it, and I got in the cab, set the alarm by using the remote on the key, then waited for it to arm. I opened the drivers door and the horn started really honking, so that must mean I didn't inadvertently disarm the alarm function. But now when I walk away from the truck and arm it, there is no annoying horn honk. Really appreciate the response from all of you guys! Stan

Well there you go. I don't know why they can't just leave things alone when they work. :D Atleast we got you looking the right direction and you figured it out for yourself, and for the next 06 owner that happens aliong, I might add. You are now a new contributing member of the forum. Good work and Welcome!

Quick Card? I never got one of those. Must be all the stuff most often asked by new vehicle owners during the first month. I confess. I asked, and hey did it for me *LOL*

Happy non-chirp feature Arming,

Joe

(Now if I can just get the wife to de-chirp her new Cherokee. She actually likes it... .

06 is different for the sequence. . and is all done OUTSIDE of your vehicle. Mine just flashes directionals now when I lock with key fob.

Look in your owners manual for yellow insert card with changes... . quite a few are in there that changes from previous years. There is also a cheat sheet card over visor when I bought mine that has a lot of common things to know.

If I remember right you hold down LOCK button for 4 but no more than 10 seconds... then while holding down push Panic button and release simultaneously. Your horn should now be deactivated.....

I just did this last night. After looking through the owners manual and following the directions to deactivate the horn chirp it would not deactivate the feature. I started playing around with the remote and doing different sequences for other features. I was able to stop the horn from honking each time you lock the door with the FOB.

I figured out the the 06 manual for the megacab is printed wrong. The sequence of events to change features with the key fob are turned around. I think there are 3 different features, park lights, horn, and unlock all doors. They have the wrong sequence for the desired option in the owners manual.

By the way this was all done while I was sitting in the vehicle with the ignition on and when I use the Mopar remote start it still honks the horn.

Hope it helps someone.

Troy

I saw the option to turn it off on my '05. Unfortunately, it's either on or off. Too bad they don't have an option like most GM products where it won't honk the first time (but it does lock) but will honk if you hit it twice. That's nice compromise so you can hear the horn if the sun is bright and you don't know if it took the first time. Oh well.

I went to dealer and they couldn't get the horn to be quiet thru 4-10 second reset then the mechanic whent in with scanner and fixed it and said it had to be done with the scaner! All different I guess. 06 3500 drw Laramie

:-laf It's a freaking diesel and your worried about the noise from your alarm, "wait" your right it's a dodge diesel it's not that noisey I stand corrected.

Thanks!!!!!

Well, I am glad that I am not the only one who had trouble with the disabling the horn while locking function. :-{}

I never saw the addendum update card but did read the entire owners manual(whew) while sitting in my truck.

Thanks to this thread the problem has been solved.

Now the question is: How to disarm the all doors unlock feature when you shift into park, turn off engine and open drivers door? I just want the drivers door to unlock not all of them. The owners manual is incorrect in doing this.

crabman :)
