Bring your fishing rod.

In Homer, in the spit, there is "hole" full of salmon.

Folks just sit around it and haul in 10-20-30 pounders day in and out.

All you need is your rod and a "snare" rigging.

What happens is once the salmon are in the "pot hole" they swim counter clockwise with their mouth open.

What locals do is set up a line with sinker at the end and floater a foot away, so as to keep the line about a foot off the bottom then atach a hook.

Toss it out and as the salmon swim around with their mouth open, they snag the line and voila! All the salmon you need.

btw... on the Homer spit their are 2 CG... one is municipal and very reasonable, the other has hydro and quite a bit more!

If you like to fish, Sockeye,(red) on the Kenai is world class.

We bank fish. cheap, easy, but congested.

Still , the best I have ever had.

The fishing for pinks off the Allison Spit in Valdez was very good. There is a camp ground at the end of the spit. I got a site backed onto the ocean. I was catching fish right out the back door of the camper. They also have fish cleaning stations along the shore line with running water.



If your into kayaking take a tour out to the Columbia Glacier. You get to paddle around amongst the ice burgs, very awesome. Your still several miles from the actual glacier.



Very good fishing in Alaska. I hope you folks up there appreciate what you have. I witnessed alot of folks taking fish just because they were there and they could. They all appeared to be tourists. An abuse of the privledge.



Drive down to BC and the situation is much different. The fishing is not anywhere nearly as good, and the licensing is very expensive. BC, stands for bring cash, not British Columbia. !! Keep that in mind when there.

Alaska trip

Having made the Alaska Hyw. trip 59 times from 1963 to the present time we have seen it in every conceivable condition.

The No. 1 rule is to slow down. The road now is in excellent condition, paved all the way except for short construction zones but north of Whitehorse those frost heaves can catch you unaware and will put a terrible strain on your rig if you are going too fast. Those little red flags on the shoulders are your warning. Slow down for them. Slow down for them. Slow down for them. You got the idea????Oo.

On the Top of The World Highway from Tok to Dawson City(not Dawson Creek) there are no trees up high because you will be above the tree line. The road is good though.

Fishing out of Homer is great but consider Ninilchik just 40 miles north. There are apprx. 200 charters boats out of Ninilchik and a lot of the bigger charter operations fish in the same general area as the Homer boats. Prices are cheaper there also. AFISHUNT CHARTERS is probably the primo outfit in Ninichik. There are other good ones also. I would stay away from the big 20 passenger party fishing boats in Homer. They will get you fish but after a long slow trip out it is 20 people fishing, tangling and more of a "meat market" atmosphere and then another long slow trip back. Not a sporting experience. Use the smaller 6 pak boats. They go to the same areas and you will get a more personalized experience.



Enjoy your trip, bring lots of $$$$ and stay awhile.

Fuel in Anchorage today is; gas $2. 99 & diesel $3. 39. In Canada it is considerably higher.

Very good posts, Mr. Goat and Jack in Alaska. Alaska is one of the best places on earth. The most important things to take on your trip are camera, money, fishing gear and time, lots of time.

Alaska is a great trip! We went with our 5th wheel in 2006. We took a little over 2 months and felt that was not enougth time. We didn't have trouble with the roads at all, the main thing is to just slow down when things get a little rough, you are up there to see the scenery anyway so why beat up the rig. Out of the 12,000 miles we drove from Iowa I don't think 200 of them were really bad.



The Top of the World Highway was a treat, that way you get to go cross the river on the ferry at Dawson. We stayed there a couple of nights and did the tourist thing and then drove up into the mountains, great scenery! Chicken is a fun place to on this route. Was disappointed in the Denali Park. We came back by the Cassiar Hwy and that was great scenery. Stewert and Hyder were good towns to visit. We did the halibit fishing out of Ninlichik, had good luck, and are they ever good eating! You are in for a great trip. Just don't hurry to fast!

We also took the trip in 06 and also went to Dawson City from Whitehorse on the Top of the World Hwy. The road was very muddy, rough and full of chuck holes. We loved Dawson City so much that we will do it again next time, however we will go in through Chicken and return back into Alaska through Chicken. We found that stretch to be more scenic and not as rough. We can't wait to go back. We also enjoyed Stewart and Hyder. We were not at all disappointed with Denali Park. Some days the tours are good and some day they are not. We took two tours and they were both good.
