2006 Ram Vs 2007

Speed "jumps" 5-8 mph instead of smooth sweep. Any one ever heard of this?

Here are some pics of Brian Welliver's 06+ Lunar S bumper. What is really unique about the application is that we incorporated a ram air cold air intake in the outer light mount. I will let Brian give you the specs on how much it reduced his EGTs (I think it dropped it around 200 degrees. We are developing this as an option and it should be available by mid October as an option to our bumpers. Brian is considering either adding ducting on the drivers side to help cool the power steering system as he will be installing a lift with larger tires or mounting an air horn in the light mount.



The kit will include a flanged 5" dia. tube section that will attach the ducting to the stock air box, special ducting that can that allow the diameter to be reduced by twisting the tube clockwise or counter clockwise depending if you want to reduce the diameter or increase the diameter. This allows you to "fit" the tube around factory compenents and since it is made of a polymer you don't have to worry about carrosion. Finally, the recessed light mount is specially sized to allow the ducting to be connected.

I think I'd incorporate some wire mesh, not too fine, to keep out chunks and critters. It could go on the bumper or where it hooks into the filter box.
 
You could use my truck for a test also .
I'd put the screen at bumper , no reason to let anything get in there , out of site or reach .
 
This is a terrible setup... Copy the PSM setup,,, 10-4?\



That thing is going to act like a wet-dry shop vac... .

I had my last truck set up the exact same way as this since it was brand new. It was a 1998 24 valve 4x4 Turbo diesel with 160k on it. I just traded it in for this new one. I Never had a problem with sucking water ever. I don't know about you, but I don't tail gate people so close that I am going to be sucking their wake or plan on trying to use my truck like a boat to where it will ingest water straight to the motor. Nothing terrible here Heavyweight.
 
You have to keep in mind that there is still a huge opening on the side of the stock airbox. It isn't like there is much, if any suction applied to the bumper hose. My guess is, it allows cooler air to exist in the airbox.



Personally I live where rain and massive snows are a regular occurance. I wouldn't be comfortable with that set up as is. For many though, I would bet it is nothing but a benefit. I would also use something like an aftermarket drop in filter. Wet paper filters can be an issue.

If you placed a 90* directly behind the opening in the bumper, and cut a slot in the bottom of the 90*, alot of the trash would stay low in the fitting and come out the slot. IT would work somewhat like a centrifugal/oil bath air cleaner.
 
I have the PSM buick intake... . Well I made the fatal mistake of going through a Drive through (automated carwash). The spray goes under the vehicle, and it power blasted my fleetgaurd filter,,, I let it sit a few days to dry out, I did not want the paper to turn to mush and suck into the intake on one of my "MANY" full throttle passes down the local blvd.



Let me correct my statement... If you are going to run in a "DRY" environment, that intake above will work great. If you run in the rain,,, I would not recommend.
 
biggy238 I like your idea about the 90* with the slot. I don't think that I am Ignorant or arrogant however. Heavyweight, you are correct and I do live on the central coast of California. It hardly ever rains here. I would love to see your configuration of the PSM Buick intake. Make me a believer. If there is a better way I would love to see it. I appreciate the neutral and positive input from every one. Thinking out side of the box is how we all move forward and as long as there are guys out there that are willing to try some thing diferent, then we can expect improvement. I thought it would be nice to share with you what I have done.
 
I like your intake. At speed, you essentially have "ram-air". The PSM buick has a hose just like yours, is just hangs straight down.



Your intake probably makes more power then most aftermarket intakes at speeds over 25 MPH. Last, it is pulling the coldest possible air compared to any under the hood intake points.
 
Most who use a ram-air type intakes, also use some kind of a water diverter in-line to allow water to travel out of the intake piping. The compact car industry has several types of diverters to serve this purpose. The more vertical your intake line the better, a horizontal line causes all kinds of water issues in rainy/snowy weather, literally freezing and choking off the intake air or doing the same at the air filter itself.
