Jeff,

I've installed the new cable in my '95. There are a couple of things to watch out for. It's kind of tough to get it pushed into the hole in the firewall. One thing that helps is to tie a cord to the end of the wire at the pedal end so when you pull it out the cord will be in the right path to reinstall the cable. You can thread it back thru the firewall with the cord.

The other thing is that the kit comes with a new throttle lever. This thing can be a real PITA to install since you have to take the linkage assembly apart to do it. BIG tip! Make sure you understand how the coil spring goes before you take it apart! If it's still under warranty let the guys at Dodge knock off their fingernail.

I'm amased at how fast this thing went. I have a 95, and was having problems with the TPS. Ordered one and since it hadn't came in by last Tues. the 19th. , I attempted to adjust the voltage per the manual prior to leaving for Myrtle Beach Wed. morning. The throttle cable was fine then. Got back last night, part had come in during my absence. Went to put on this morning and cable had three strands broke and frayed out.

There was not visable problem and 2 driving days and 1481 miles later three strands broken.

This is serious, and I hate to think about that thing jaming coming down one of those mountains I traveled through. I will be contacting the NHTSB.

2 CENTS WORTH
First off just for kicks, while driving out in the middle of no where going about 40-60mph turn off the ing. (key) then try to turn right or left.
If your a little blonde working a Hooter's or the "Hulk" you best forget about the key thing. NO STEERING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Remember it locks the wheel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In a panic attact try to remember to turn the key of-then-back on. Forget that idea.
Fix--go to John Deere, ask for the spherical ball joint for the throttle linkage on the 140 lawn tractor, remove the ball stud from said coupler, get a right angle drill and about 1/4-1/2 inch below where the OE ball stud is mounted, drill a hole and install the new stud and hook cable end. Can be done on the eng. Takes longer to
to get the tools out than to complete the task, and wire or plastic incased cable will not fail anytime soon.
Seem's they had the wrong angle to the dangle in relation to where the cable rides most of the time.

Thanks for your tips on the throttle
cable. I had mine replaced at the
Scheid Diesel Rally! That should
hold me for another 100,000 miles.

Hey Albacore44,
Thanks for the tip dude! As soon as I read your post I went out and checked the cable and sure enough about 3 strands were frayed. I replaced it yesterday after getting the wrong one the first time(fortunately my wife is the Office manager at the dealer so she can get me parts!). One thing to note when getting a replacement cable for 1995's, for engine # below 45308491 use cable assy. 4897406AA, for those above that engine# use 4897407AA, the cable is the same, but the replacement secondary throttle lever is different (hole sizes vary) make sure you get the right one!
Thanks again, albacore44

Re: Throttle linkage

I had already replaced my throttle cable, but on a trip to Boise, Id. last Feb. I was driving thru a heavy snowstorm in Wyoming when I noticed that my engine would not idle below 2000 rpm. (almost 70 mph in overdrive). This is not fun in 4 inches of snow! I discovered when I stopped that I could manually pull the throttle linkage down to normal, but each time I drove several miles, the problem returned.

I went to a Dodge dealer in Laramie and was told that the governer in the injector pump was bad, and that it would take several days to get a new pump. I decided to continue my trip to Boise. When I got to Boise, I took my truck to a Dodge dealer there and was told that the trouble was the linkage between the throttle cable and the injector pump. They replaced the connecting rod and I have had no trouble since.

If you can, it pays to get a second opinion!

I'm surprised that it wasn't recalled long ago. Mine got stuck open wide open while passing on a two lane road,I was going 95 mph when I shut it down and coasted to the side. I filed a complant with the NHTSB in '97. I replaced it myself,$27 if I remember right, knew right away Dodge was aware of the problem otherwise the new cable would have been $97.

In 1994 of Oct. after I bought my 1995 I was coming down to Phoenix from Flagstaff when my throttle stuck and I had a big 18 wheeler right on my bumper. I tried hitting the brakes a couple times, thinking it was the cruise control acting up, since the cruise control gets turned on by accident alot of times. But, that didn't work and the speed just kept getting faster. I didn't want to turn off the ignition because I wasn't sure I could steer it, so I threw it up into neutral. This was after I got over into the right lane and was able to safely coast to a slower speed. When I put it back into Drive, the throttle was Ok. I complained to my dealer and I never had anymore trouble. I wonder if this was the same problem as other people are talking about on this thread? If so, I should check my cable now. The time it happened to me the truck was new. It now has 30,000 miles on it. If only I knew where to look.

If you still are thinking at this point slip it into Neutral and coast to a stop with the engine screaming. It wont hurt it a bit. Call DC and tell them to come get it before it runs out of fuel.

I went out and checked mine last weekend. I could see one broken strand still attached hanging and waving here I am (82k). I am gotng to try and get this replaced under extended service contract.
