All the smoke leaked out of my Shutdown Solenoid

So, I asked the wife if I should title the thread “I let all the smoke leak out of my A$$ (Automatic Shutdown Solenoid)”, but she said NO.

Anyway, I started my truck tonight and drove a couple hundred yards to my parent’s who live right behind me. When I turned the key off it kept running. I tried to push the lever down but it wouldn’t go. After @ 30 seconds I smelled it getting hot and it shutdown but started smoking where the wires go into it. I unplugged it and it quit smoking. I checked all three pins in the connector and everything’s working properly. It’s done it for just a couple of seconds 2 or 3 times in the past few weeks.

Anybody had this happen to them? The starter “trigger” powers the pull-up relay and there’s no power unless the starter’s engaged. I know the starter didn’t hang. Key off there’s no power to the “hold-up” side of the solenoid. Only thing I can figure is the pull-up relay hung.

Being a 2nd gen guy I do not know all the workings but being an electrician I can tell you this. If a solenoid is energized and the rod does not move and fill the hole the coil will get very hot and burn up. I only mention this as you said you tried to manually move it and a no go. Maybe something mechanically hanging up ?.

Once it burned up the spring pushed the lever down and it moves freely now.

I got the new solenoid and relay on today, all is well.

Yesterday morning I pulled up to the drive through for a biscuit and habitually turned the ignition off. Of course with the lever tied up she kept running. I went ahead and placed my order and pulling up to the window it felt like my parking brake was on. I pulled the lever and no change. I pulled away and it still felt like the brake was on, no power. I noticed my radio wasn’t on and realized I’d never turned the ignition back on. I flipped it back on, the transmission shifted, and all was back to normal.

Any chance I damaged anything in the transmission with my stupidity?
