Hi all, Im back after being off the boards for a year or so and hoping things have progressed nicely in my absence.

I am hoping the way has been forged to install an Allison, Aisin or the 68re in my 2001 currently equipped with a reman NV5600 (about a year old). I am not looking to redo the steering column, just putting a ratchet shifter on the floor so hopefully that will save me some time and effort.

I have searched and found some info on Allison conversion but no hard numbers. I would like to hear pro's and cons of all the auto's listed. I am beyond considering a built 47RE because I have 19. 5" wheels and 3. 55 rear end so I would like a low first gear to get things rolling, also I have an exhaust brake I want to keep utalizing. Thanks for the input.

Pick the 68RFE

If anyone plans to do any towing with a 6-speed auto conversion the 68RFE has better OD ratios than the Allison. The Allison ODs are geared too high IMO, 5th is geared higher than 6th on the NV5600! The 68RFE would be a better choice for 3. 54 and 3. 73 axle ratios, 5th would be great for towing down the highway . . . with 265/75/16" tires and 3. 54 axle 2000 RPM gives you 63 MPH, 2250 gets you 71 MPH. I like to tow at 65-68, up to 70. . . the 68RFE would be perfect.

My first choice would be the 68rfe then the Aisin, unfortunately from the posts ive been able to find, that solution is a long way off. Thanks for the links on the Allison. Please keep the info comming

Vaughn;

Do you know of anyone running a 68RFE behind a 2nd Gen 24v?

I am aware of a few Allison 1000's running in that configuration, but only through reading the Gmac / Brayden threads. They evidentily must use a custom TCM, a couple of Can Bus signals, and the output rpm signal from a GM TC (which must be swapped also).

Do you have any idea what 68RFE needs, in the form of electrics / electronics, to run in the same configuration? Are even where I could look to do some rsearch?

Jim, not aware of anyone that has a 68RFE yet. I was just speaking theoretically I guess, if the 68RFE was a choice. I've been meaning to call DTT or Sun Coast to see if anyone was working on it. Since it's fully electronic someone would have to build a controller. I would sure love to stuff a 68RFE under my '98 12-valve :D

I have been thinking of a swap in my truck lately. My motorlife gets cheaper when the weather gets nicer around here. :)

I like the 5 speed auto's. So if I decide to un-cork the wallet for an auto conversion, that is the path I would go. Just about any auto that I would put in would need some building to handle my Hp. I am hoping that if I stay with Dodge related stuff then I won't have to swap transfer cases.

If I go the G56 route I sort of run into the same problem due to the HD clutch required (and flywheel). But I think would be cheaper, less complicated and probably more trouble free.

I have read about at least one G56, several Allison's and zero Aisin or 68RFE conversions.

Trying to figure out which is best. :confused::confused::confused:
