How do fellas,

I'm sure this has been beaten to death. I was given an Allison 5 speed that was rebuilt for heavy towing before it was wrapped up and stuck in the corner of their garage. The husband passed away a while ago and the wife wanted to gone. I felt bad about taking it for free,so I tossed her a couple hundred buck anyway. I did let her know what it was worth.

I thought I read about a conversion kit and harness and what not to mount it behind our Cummins. Since my transmission is on its last legs and don't have the $$$$$$ till tax time.

What say you? Please don't beat on me too bad. :-laf

This can be done! i have seen a kit to do it. adapters, computers and all. you will have to modify your drive lines front and back. i will look for the kit online after church and post it.

DESTROKED: Cummins Conversions

you could get it all from here but someone else makes a complete kit. even if you have the trans i think it would be cheaper if you called dave goerend up and let him build one.

you have to think 2 drive lines need to be modified there is a few hundred computer works about 1. 5k or so then the new adapter plate 800 or so a flex plate thats another few hundred then you know there will be a few bugs that need to be worked out so plan or a few more hundred as you can see it can start building fast. but here is the flip side you would have something pretty dang cool! well i think.

i have thought about buying a ford and putting a cummins in it just to show how much i dis like the power stroke. lol But i think a cummins powered excursion would be so cool!

i say sell the trans you have put the money towards an custom built one that will fit right in. that will save the most money for you.

I believe all the modern automatic transmissions are computer controlled. Their shift points and torque converter lock up controlled by the computer interfacing with the engine and road speed sensors.

It would be extremely challenging and expensive to make the conversion and have it work in a satisfactory manner.

That's the best advice you can get in your situation.

Its been done, its not cheap and easy, you may still have issues with the Ally depending on how your Cummins is powered up. The 5 speed ally's need some help for much of anything.

Getting a program to control the trans and getting it to work right is the trick. The hardware is available but you have to load something on it. Suncoast has the controllers but I think they use somebody else to provide the software.

With a 4x4 you will need a GM t-case plus rebuilding both drive lines. Step down when going to the GM t-case I think but would probably depend on how you drive it.

I want to thank everyone who has taken time and offered great advice.

I didn't realize it would be so costly to use an Allison behind our Cummins. It would be sweet to have an affordable 5 speed transmission for our trucks. I'd love to have a trans rebuilt by one of the pro's most folks go to in the lower 48,but shipping costs to Alaska is too costly.

Thanks again-Casey

how much would truck freight cost from Iowa? Dave Georend build the shipping cost in to the trans both ways. i would at least call him up just to see...

Shipping cost are from $600-$800 each way. I would buy one of his trans (Georend) in a heart beat if it was affordable for me.

Its very rare for me to purchase anything weighing over 75 lbs because I hate being raped without at least a reach around on parts ect. . I can usually get a decent discounts on truck parts and what not. I do have a good friend who use to do transmissions regularly before he closed his shop. The only thing is he has never done a 47 or 48 series transmission. I may buy the rebuild kit from one of the big names and have him do my trans and ship the OD down to the lower 48 for the rebuild. The only recommend I got was for a local guy using BD parts and he wants $5K + the cost of a TC and any billet parts. Plus he only gives a 6 month warranty. Never heard anything bad about his work and all the racers use him,but $5K and no TC won't fly for me.

Yep, you could buy a valve body, torque converter and rebuild kit from Dave or any number of places and have your local guy rebuild your transmission.

Godspeed,
Trent
