I spoke with a Dodge rep this weekend and he told me that you can get a Allison automatic transmission on the 2003 Cummins equipped trucks by special order.

Not sure which Allison it is but I bet with all TDR resources we can find out by weeks end so everyone check your sources and let's see what we can find out.

My conections at Dodge say not yet, it would be cool though. Sounds like this will happen but not in 2003. The talk was the LCT-1000, same as the Duramax trans. One thing about it, when it does get here we will have it all worked out. We have extensive test data and have already developed many modifications for the Allison trans. Looking foward to it.

At a recent Cummins Power Boosters meeting in Portland OR, Cummins cheif engineer for the common rail engine said NO!. That question was put to him and he said Dodge is working on an auto transmission designed for the HO '03 engine. This transmission is not ready yet but it is close and when finished it will be exhaust brake compatible. :D Like he said - do you really think Allison, a GM owned company, will sell to Dodge? At any rate this new engine is impressive:)

Happy trails

Allison 5 speed?

Today I received a glossy brochure from Dodge Corp by way of a local Dodge dealer which indicates that one of the choices in transmissions for the Cummins is a five-speed automatic. Go figure.

Gubby, Read Steves article on the third gens. I believe it says that a 48 re trans will be availiable half way through the model year. I believe it is a five speed. I might be wrong though since it has been awhile since I read the article.

The 48re will be a mid year introduction and it will be a 4 speed. The info we got at the show is that it will basically be a beefed up 47re so that the auto can handle the HO engine. The 5 speed that you saw in that brochure isn't an option for the Cummins it's only an option on the 5. 7L Hemi.

The way I read it I thought the 5 speed auto was going to be an option for the HO Cummins as well as the 6 speed manual?

I have the full press kit sitting right next to me, and the links to it are in the article. Here's the link to the specifications sections - https://www.turbodieselregister.com/hdlaunch/04_Specifications.pdf . You'll see links to the different transmission options - the 545RFE trans which is the one you're talking about says "Optional with the 5. 7-Liter engines" and right below that you'll see the info on the 47RE/48RE. The 48RE info being put in there at all was a mistake. When I asked about the 48RE at the press intro they at first said there's no such thing, then I said "it's in the press kit" and I got the deer in headlights look!! Looks like the little info we have on the 48RE was a PR mistake.

You won't be able to get the HO Cummins with an auto until mid year '03 (January 1 of '03 as I understand it) and that will be with the 48RE behind it.

Clint, without starting some kind of transmission war..... hint, hint everyone..... I have a question! I have heard that there are problems with the allison transmission's as far as clutch slipage from the git go, have you guys been into them yet or are you just selling the V/B's..... just wondering!
