Does anybody have an Ox locker? or looked into it? Again, I think most of the folks unhappy with the street manners of the Detroit are driving light weight trucks. Everyone I know using one in a 10,000 lbs + work truck is happy. JTMcC.

rspinks - The first time that I heard ( felt ) that LOUD clunk and jolt from the locker engaging under power I immediatley pushed in the clutch and coasted to a stop - got out and just knew I was going to find the rear drive shaft in the middle of the road. Before that, all the Detroit equiped trucks that I had driven had been automatics, which don't seem to be as obnoxious as a stick shift application. The look on the faces of people driving near you when it would engage was priceless.

I must say when I had weight in the bed , I never got a violent jolt from the Locker. But, they are not for everyone. Thomas

Thomas you're right about automatics, I think the fluid coupling dampens out the jerking action of the locker. My truck also used to go into a violent bucking/harmonic motion routine in while trying to gently transition from coasting to throttle when crawling along in granny gear. Lots of driveline slop with even more slop in the locker didn't make for a 'tight' feeling drivetrain.

Thank you for all of the kind responses. I am thinking of getting a D70HD detroit locker and having someone machine the ring bolt holes for the D80 ring gear. Or maybe I will get the trac lok and stack the friction disks like I have heard to get it not-so-limited in the slip department.

Once again I thank you for the info

Mark

PS If I run into walls too many times, I might just bite the bullet and throw an ARB in it. But I am looking for something to be there all the time without having to think about if I turned the switch on.

Thanks again

rspinks - I know what Ya' mean. I had an old 4 speed and a NP 205 with a coarse 10 spline coupler and a rear drive shaft with a carrier bearing set up and the Detroit. It would buck and jerk till no end when going real slow. To help the situation out I changed the transmission/transfercase out for a 32 spline version ( tighter w/ less slop ) and kept the Detroit. Some things are just to good to give up ! Thomas

P. S. Mark , Fine choice in my opinion. I restacked my Track-Loc clutches with GREAT results and I got a H. D. 70 Dtroit on deck if the Track - Loc ever fails. Good Luck, Thomas

Mark, I don't think the Detroit would be a mistake and Thomas keep us posted on how your re-stacking is working out. That was a great discovery about the LSD plates being stacked intentionally loose from the factory.

I would have had an ARB a long time ago if they made a unit for the Dana 80 with 35 spline axles. A open differential dually is not much fun even in 4wd.

Now they finally make it so as soon as Christmas is over I will get one installed.

They are not cheap! Around $853 for the unit only. Then a compressor or air bottle.

Since I plan on a Kelderman rear unit soon,The ARB compressor is what I will use.

I have one in my TJ and I am really happy with it.

The problem with the ARB is that it usually fails when you need it the most. Being avid 4 wheelers we see the failures almost every time we are on the trail. The most common failures are broken air lines, failed compressors, and the worst blown seals. When you blow the seals in the locker usually when you turn the air on it blows the gear oil out of the axle. :(

Here's what Eaton says about availability of their electric locker for Dana applications (they seem to be more responsive than Trak Tech):

"Hello there! We do have plans to release the Eaton ELocker for Dana applications. In fact, the Dana 60 is scheduled for a late-2003 release (subject to change). The Dana 70/80 will not hit the scene until the 2005 timeframe (subject to change). "

Seems like a long wait, but everything I've seen on the air lockers suggests maintenance is key to keeping the seals intact and the locker working... electric seems a little more forgiving.

how about more details on how we restack the clutches in the lsd?

Happy holidays to you all... may your cummins benefit from the spirit of the season!

jmadden , I brought the Dana 80 clutch restack post back up to the top for Ya'. Take a look , it has a lot of great info. If Ya' have any questions I'll be happy to try and answer. HTH Thomas

Gentlemen,

I have a 2002 2500. There is (living proof) a detroit locker that is made for this dana 80 35 spline axle unit. I purchased my detroit locker, model # 255SL131A from www.drivelinesuperstores.com

They are great to deal with and the rear works absolutely flawless. I totally recomend them to anyone running the Dana 80 which is basically junk in my book.

$549. 00 on sale. $600 regular.

I would caution against the Detroit- indestrucatble, yes, but it is a pain on the street!

Also, in the Dana 3:54, installing the Detroit, I lost my anti brake lock up gear, and had to cut my Mag Hytec dipstick off.

I guess I'm dead proof?;)
