Stealth Powerstroke in Anchorage!

Mercedes 2.7 liter CDI diesel...

5 days of haggle, and finally close the deal (price -wise)

Go tonite to sign loan docs.

Dealer says the bank has changed the financing terms to the tune of $60. 00 per month.

that is an Extra $3,600 over 60 months.

Hated to leave the red Jetta there. I really wanted to take her home.

Just had to vent:mad:

Travel for your TDI

If you are willing to travel, set your price by looking into the sites which show the dealer costs on auto's. ( http://www.google.com > VW VW discount auto dealers). Then go into the VW site (or one one of the new auto sites) get the info on dealers within the distance you are willing to travel. Then email and/or call each of them until you get a yes !! You may find that you will get several yes's. You might even get the one you almost bought, since dealers will often swap cars with other dealers within 200 or so miles.

It's a buyers market right now and there are lot's of dealers out there who would be more than happy to sell you a TDI.

That's too bad.....

Look at the used ones..... you can save a lot over new this way... .

For the ALH TDI engine look for:

'99-present A4 Jettas/Golfs

'98-present A4 New Beetles

Matt

This was a used one - 2002 Jetta TDI only 4,500 miles on it. loaded, moonroof and all. sales price is 17,000

New one is about 23,000

Dealer did call today, and said they may have the rate back to the original deal. They will let me know in the AM when Volkswagon credit gets back in.

I am hoping they come through.

BS... They're playing hard ball. You did the right thing. Don't budge. They'll take the origional offer. I hate their deceitful tactics. They'll call you and say you can come pick up your car. And I wish you many happy miles with it.

I turned my nose up on a deal one time over the $250 dealer prep. The salesman said "you'd walk away over $250?". I said "yes, will you?". I got up from the chair in his cubical and he scratched off the $250. I also got the $2000 instant rebate and another $1500 off. The car was only $19k to begin with.

If they play hardball, you have to play hardball right back at them. I waited two weeks for the salesman to call me on my '98 Dodge Cummins. If I'd have known he was going to call in the afternoon I wouldn't have been sitting by the phone at three in the morning. :p

I like when they use the worn out line... "another couple was looking at it this morning"... I reply as I walk away... "I wouldn't want to buy it out from under them. There's one over at **** Dodge I want to look at anyhow". They change their tune real fast. Don't let them get you. They know every trick in the book and they're heartless.

Many years back ( 1987) now exwife#2 and I were shopping for a car for her, she wanted a new Dodge Colt.

we went to a few dealerships and looked at cars, and even before the internet, I must say that my ex-missus did her research on the car she wanted.

First of all, I was not permitted to speak to any salespeople at the dealerships.

We walked in and wifey said:

we want an 87 Colt with specified equipment and color( basically a stripped car , with just cloth seats and AC) and we want it for $8k out the door.

and we will give you exactly 10 minutes to give us the deal we want or we will walk... .....

back then the base deal on what she wanted was right at $8k

we went to a few dealerships and they had what she wanted but put a $5k premium on the car.

Found a dealer in a small town who would work with us, the dealer told us he would give us our deal, but needed to find the car.

we put him on to the dealer who had our car but with the $5k premium, the dealers did an exchange ( or whatever they do) and we got the car she wanted without paying the $5k dealer mark up.

too bad the car ended up being a POS, and we gave it back to Chrysler Credit

play hardball with these folks at VW, it can't hurt.

good luck

big jake

THE FORD GUY!!!!!!!!!!!

Then there is the off chance that the dealer is telling the TRUTH (the BANK jacked up the loan)! If the price of the car hasn't changed and you like that car, go look for your own financing, your OWN bank or credit union will usually do right by you.

Got my 03 jetta wagon tdi 5 speed for $ 19,400. They really hold their value, rated #5 in resale value. Just get one, this is the best new car I have ever owned. Forget about consumer reports, the ratings were skewed due to the window regulator problem and the coil packs, both issues that have been solved.

I bought it!!

I bought it. . The dealer came through.

17,114 for the car with 4,300 miles

5. 5 % rate over 4 years.

238. xx per month

E7Mack, first of all, join the tdiclub, its one of the best forums on the web. Post a question in the power junkie section, you'll get more than enough info. Also, do yourself a favor, and read the TDIFAQ, you'll see a link at the top. It really will answer any question you'll have.

Power Enhancement

I would suggest a wetterauer chip. This is about as far as you can go while keeping the stock clutch. Throw injectors and other things in the mix, you'll be buying a new clutch, and will need boost gauge, boost valve/dawes device, etc. BTW, intakes and exhaust do nothing for TDIs performance wise, dont waste your money.

I couldn't disagree more with your post.

Gutting the exhaust on my TDI made a HUGE difference... . as did freeing up the intake. Anyone who thinks this is false needs a quick lesson in engine performance. Get the air/fuel in and out as quickly and easily as possible (and hopefully burn a good portion of it... . )... . and reap the benefits.

The guys on TDIClub.com will very seldom do ANYTHING that is not in the owner's manual.

The only reason people haven't hogged out their cats is because most of them are tree hugging hippies... . AND because the TDI powered race teams leave their OEM cats intact.

In my opinion - even 100% bone stock TDI's should have boost/EGT gauges - it's the easiest way to constantly keep your eyes on things.

E7Mack96: (cool screen name by the way... . I have a piston out of an E7-427 that ate itself  ) You can do boxes, chips, injectors, EXHAUST/INTAKE mods, bigger plunger in the pump, conversion to mechanical pump... . from there you're getting into big money stuff.

BTW: My exhaust on the TDI is COMPLETELY gutted and it's quiet as can be..... you'll never even make a cop turn his head... . except if you shift quickly and like to hear the VNT blades making their music.

This post was not intended as a flame - it represents my own honest opinions.

Matt

Well your uninformed comments are of course your perrogative;)

Tons of tdi'ers at freds have modified their cars beyond belief, including chips, ecu's, injectors, exhaust, intakes, propane, nitrous, you name it. Many have eliminated their cats by using the techtonics tuning downpipe.

The point is, that plenty of people have DYNO-TESTED their tdis with no muffler/straight pipe, aftermarket exhausts, etc. None of the systems yielded any noteable HP difference. So while you may have your 'honest opinions', the dyno doesn't lie.

Your theory of get more air in and out is correct on a basic level, but in this case, the volume of air out is more limited by the amount of air the turbo can move. Unless they are really restrictive, exhausts on diesels are more useful for reducing EGT's, not increasing performance.

Be sure you get someone with a vag-com to do the EGR mod on your new TDI, and do something about the CCV, before you have a clogged intake.

Also bone stock tdi's do not suffer from boost spikes, or high egts. You can feel free to gun it up mountain passes without worry, no need for gauges. Start chipping and throwing other mods in, yes.

Is your definition of 'uninformed' mean that I don't buy into what the members of the TDIClub.com web community think is right for diesels? If that's the case... then I'm guilty.

If your definition of me being 'uninformed' implies that I don't know squat about diesels... . I'd have to disagree.

The exhaust system on the VW TDI leaves a lot to be desired in comparison to even that of the CTD powered Rams..... which still is a far cry from a perfect exhaust system. The number of bends that exhaust makes is obscene... . not to mention it's diameter... it isn't exactly over-spec. (Granted... . we are dealing with 90hp engines..... ) The OEM exhaust is probably appropriate for OEM power levels... . which is why one does not see any gains on the dyno. Once the TDI'er has upped his HP level - he must ditch the OEM exhaust... . and turbo/intake/etc.

It is the well known truth that ANY backpressure post turbine discharge is not doing you any good for flow/performance.

I hold the opinion that if I can get away with a straight pipe - then I'll run it..... at least I know it won't hurt performance. I don't need dyno proven horsepower numbers to convince me that my exhaust is flowing more freely.

On MY TDI... . gutting the cat made a tremendous change - mine could be in the minority of cars that this helped out... . but I seriously doubt it.

There is always a need for gauges - boost leaks, slowly failing turbos, intake restrictions, etc. can all be more easily diagnosed with gauges installed... ...

Matt

I"m not saying at all you dont know about diesels. I'm saying that dyno results are bottom line. You can make yourself happy all day with your 'free' flowing exhaust and increased noise, however, the dyno doesn't lie. There is no performance gain to be had, even on tdi's with chips and injectors. Thats my only point. If it makes you happy to modify it, then by all means. Some people put big fins on the back of their civics too:rolleyes: ;)
