Also on garage setup - cement floor paint?

Have any of you painted the floors of your garage with a high gloss concrete paint? What did you use and how is it holding up?



I've been in airplane hangars where you could eat off the floor. The stuff is very shiny and tough and always looks in great condition.

I worked in a shop once that had painted floors, they used epoxy. It was very expensive, but held up very well. I wish I had done the same.

I use to work in hangars like you speak of. As a young Marine I was graced with the priveledge of painting them every now and again. Not sure if the paint was anything special. Typical white and gray bucket with a mil-spec number. It was always kept like a mirror and it seemed there was always some young Marine scrubbing it who had ended up getting in trouble out in town the weekend before. Have you tried calling any cement places?

I know if you use regular floor paint in a garage, the hot tires of vehicles will take the paint up. Epoxy is the way to go but VERY expensive and the fumes are nasty when its curing. I think Hoe Depot seels a clear floor coating that is supposedly heat resistant.

A friend just did his garage and workshop floors with a grey high-gloss epoxy coating he found @ Home Depot- cost was pretty reasonable. Let me know & I'll find out the name of the stuff & what it cost if you want.

Griot's Garage sells paint specifically for that purpose. The ad claims great results, and resiliance to the hot tire problem. I was thinking about trying it.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll check out Home Depot and Griots Garage. On www.ultimategarage.com he doesn't recommend painting the floor because you'll have to re-do it every couple of years anyway. Gotta think this one over. I don't want it to be more hassle than it was worth.

My garage has clear concrete sealer on it - has been there for 9 years with no problems. Cleans up nicely - bug and tar remover will take any spill off of it and leaves no stain.



Don't know where it came from - builder did it as a part of the trim package. But don't think it is anything special.

When I built my shop, (30'x40') after the concrete cured I applied the clear sealer. It's been on there about 3 years and does a good job. It helps prevent oil spills, etc. from soaking in.



I considered painting it, but decided that it would be a real pain later on to repaint with having to move equipment etc. before painting.



BTW, for oil spills I use cheap cat litter. It's the kind that is made from clay and is cheaper than regular "oil dry" and works just as well.

After I posted that reply I was afraid you were going to ask what brand it was. I went out to the shop to see if had any leftovers, but I guess I didn't keep any. I guess I've slept too many times since then to remember what the brand was?



At the time I built the shop, I was buying most things from Builder's Square or Home Depot. Don't know what kind of builder's supply stores you have, but it should be a common item. If you can't find any, try contacting a cement contractor. The guy that did my shop floor clued me in on the stuff. He did stress that the concrete has to completely cure on the surface before application.
