The one I purchased is specifically for the cummins, and sure there is no warranty if you install it wrong.

If you read the warranty from altestart, it say that there is no warranty for the load boss alternator if it is installed on a diesel truck.

This is part of what their warranty says. The warranty does not cover failure due to installation on diesel application or improper installation, other defective parts, low fluid levels, abuse, over-crank, submersion in liquid or commercial, off-road or marine use.

That is wrong !!!!! I just talked to them the warranty is as stated in my invoice and what comes with the alternator,. I have it right here. I believe that statment is a cut and paste on the ebay post for the non diesel alternators. if you buy the one specifically desingned, built, and sold as a cummins replacment you have the lifetime warranty !!!!!

Just another thought, a little late maby, but the next time you have an alt quit, you might try pulling the brush holder out and checking the brushes. It comes out the back of the alt. and the brushes are only around $5. 00 and while they solder in, they are not hard to replace, I have done a bunch of them on several differant alt. types. Sure saves a lot af coin.

Looks to me like it has commercial exclusion, sorta leaves me out.

OK all,

This post is getting a bit old but "mechanic (David)" has it right.

Most of you are replacing alternators at big bucks (hey we couold even buy a few gal of diesel fuel for the difference) between what a new alternator goes for and what a new set of brushes cost. The brush system is designed to wear out after about 100K.

That's just the way mechanical systems are.

We need to learn how to fix our trucks. Not just replace things!

K5IP: I hope one alternator thread doesn't make you think folks here don't know how to work on our trucks, I bought a more heavier duty one, 205 amps can you do that with a brush replacment :-laf Give us some credit.

I have had the unfortunate experience of getting a alt from a gasser even though the parts guy insisted it was for a diesel, the book listed it as so but the pulley was shy 2 grooves, destroyed the belt and lasted about a month. I have high miles and my experience has been about 200,000 miles per alternator. stormy

100k sounds about right. Mine went out at 110k, $5. 95 brushes from Napa and a half hour of my time fixed it right up.

218k now, guess I should be thinking about it again before it quits.

Alt. brush replacement

I see a number of replies say to replace the brushes on the alternator. How easy or difficult is this to do? I am presently having problems with my '97 w/91,000 on it and I believe a bad alt could be the problem. Thanks, John
