You are absolutely right jhenderson, air cooled engines would not be easy in a vehicle or chassis never designed for air cooled engines. Since these vehicles commonly don't have any routing or air passages for these type of engines. Not to mention that Deutz Diesel Engines are often heavier than more conventional Diesel Engines like say a 4BT. But Deutz Diesels are normally more compact. No free lunch, option 1. A heavier engine that's more compact, or option 2. A lighter engine that's larger.

I service some forklifts with the 3.3L Cummins in them and it is a good little engine. It is only rated at 55ish horsepower in its naturally aspirated form but turbo versions are available too. They definitely are variable speed also.
