A couple days ago there were some post indicating alternators being out of alignment and it sounded like a common problem, but I couldn't find anything in the archives about it. When I put a new belt on last week, I noticed the belt was a couple groves to the rear of pulley and was riding on top of the retaining ring on the pulley. I had the a/c compressor changed a couple years ago and thought maybe the belt was installed wrong. Put on the new belt and it jumped the two groves as soon as I started the engine. Then I thought they must have used the wrong compressor or pulley. What do you guys think? What would be the cure if its just out of alignment with no adjustment feature?

Thanks

I would first double check that the belt tensioner has not gone bad. They will sometimes get to leening on a sight angle and will cause the belt to walk its self off. Good luck. :p

What Midnight said.

I had the same problem but it was the A/C pulley that the belt would not track straight on. I replaced the tensioner and now it's true again. I'm not sure if the tensioner could cause the alternator to mistrack because the belt goes to the A/C first, but if that's the trouble, you can get the tensioner from your local parts store or Cummins for half the dealer price.

Thanks for the help Larry, but you didn't get everything in my post. I'm the last guy to put the belt on and it jumped over two groves when I started the engine.

Did you try it again. It could be a bad tensioner but since it jumped immediately I would suspect some kind if install misalignment. Course being a machine it could be about anything. :)

OH! and you can forget the chewing his but part, guess I wasn't paying full attention, sorry  I'm so embarased I deleted my stupid post.
