I have almost 200k on my alternator and it seems to be getting weak. My opinion, "it owes me nothing and I'm ready to replace it!"

Questions I have:

How much is a new dealership OEM one cost?

How much for the rebuild kit?

Is there good aftermarkets?

Other options:

How much different is the alternator kit for welding?

Will it work like a regular alternator?

Does it weld AC or DC?

Can I run electrical appliances through it?

If yes on previous question, can I use as 120v generator?(construction tools)

Price ?

Thank for your inputs.

I am working on my third alt, they last about 200k or so. broke down last spring with alt out ,got gasser alt, not the same, less ribs. partrs place said it was for diesel ,they were wrong but made it good after much frustration. bought new not rebuilt. stormy

I just got a brand new one from http://www.RockAuto.com

It cost me $137. 79

minus TDR discount... -$6. 89

Total with tax/shipping... $145. 64

Fast shipping, great prices and excellent customer service.

If you want to place an order with the discount - make sure you type in the discount code just like the picture below.

I picked one up at an Advanced Auto Parts store for about $180 w/ a lifetime warranty. Prices went up from there upto about $250 ( my cost for OEM not list price). This one was the only one I could find that had anything more than a 1-2 year warranty. I believe NAPA sells a rebuild kit for the alt. , not sure tho.

what do you mean by "getting weak". Not much to go wrong with the alternator that could make it weak except perhaps for the brushes. They are not a big deal.

I'm running the Premier PowerWelder in my Jeep. The Jeep version is rated at 160 hot amps. I think the stock CTD alternator is rated for 136 cold amps. Big difference. Hook up was very easy using supplied instructions. The Jeep stock unit was only rated for 60 amp cold rated. The welder also lays a very nice bead using 1/4" 6011 rod. The first time out on the trail with the welder a club member with a TJ ripped apart the suspension. We were able to weld everything back together and continue down the trail.

On the trail one of the guys was a professional welder. I had him run the welder.

WOW! thats nice wcjp! 6011 welding rods I'm impressed! Thanks for the website bmoeller I'm going to look into that. Perhaps they even make one thats AC/DC, that would really cool! Imagine that, AC/DC welder and you can use it as a generator for camping(it may not be cost effective but a cool idea).

Thanks for you inputs guys!

The Premier has an AC output. It's rated for 2300watts. Won't work on digital accessories or flourescent lights. It will run standard lights, grinders and blenders. Also, the polarity is reversible. The Premier will also run a Readywelder(wire feed). I didn't opt to upgrade to the Readywelder. I figured the only time I'd need the welder is in a dirty, greasy enviroment. Wire feed doesn't perform well in these surroundings. The 6011 will burn through just about any contaminants.
