Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) fuel gage on and off

so I'm getting tired of turning my alternator on and off manually through a switch in the cab and it's actually stilll killing batteries after a week or two especially if it sits a couple of days. So I am trying to figure out a voltage regulator that will work for my application. It's an 84 chevy with a 94 cummins in it. I tried a mid 70s f100 electro-mechanical voltage regulator but it wasn't able to handle the output of the alternator and started smoking after about 2 minutes of working. I don't have the pcm and don't really want more electronics on the truck since it is so dead reliable right now except the batteries dying.

So i am looking for a way to regulate my alternator externally and I need some suggestions. Thanks

I put a 2002 motor in my 92. Used a voltage regulator from an 85 dodge. $13. 00 part at any auto store. Seems to be working fine.
