Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Alternator turning method slips

i hear a lot about how people use the alternator to turn the motor to find TDC. when i do it, i simply slip the belt. turning the balancer doesn't work as i can't move it little incriments at a time. i might get the barring tool, but i'm curious as to how other do it by the alternator?

Turning engine (alternator method)

First time I tried this was when I needed to adjust the valves. I found out that if you use a 22 milm socket on the alternator nut it will turn one way and not the other. If you try it and the belt just slips try the other direction. I cant remember if it is clock wise or counter clock wise.

I use the nut on the cooling fan - bigger wrench - easier turning.

Why at the alt belt pulley?? Go right to the crankshaft bolts. I used a long handle snap-on 1/2 inch drive ratchet with a deep mm socket to fit one of the bolts. You can turn the crank from the top of the engine. Or just purchase the barring tool. It connects to the ring gear. (Its slower to turn the crank with).
