Ok. .

I did the search here and came up blank on this... .

I know our factory alternators are 120amp and at times depending on the situation they can be put to a test. With the recent addition of the 150/95 45psi FASS unit on my truck and a Flex-A-Lite fan install tomorrow I am looking for options for a upgrade to the charging system. With a aftermarket stereo, electric fans & fuel system and running the air conditioning this summer I want to head off a problem before it has a chance to arrive. So has anyone come across a better alternator for our trucks which is a bolt in fit to upgrade the charging system for the heavier load usage?. . Any help is appreciated..... Andy

For a slow turning diesel engine, you need an alternator that was designed for a diesel engine. That means a large case alternator that makes 140-150 amps low in the rpm range. You want to stay away from an alternator that PEAKS at the amps output you desire. Those are for gassers.

I'm looking at this one:

21 SI Alternators, 22 SI Alternators, Large Truck Alternators, Caterpillar Alternators, 21-SI Alternators, 22-SI Alternators, 21SI Alternators, 22SI Alternators

The big 22si is hung off some Series 60 Class 8 Detroits in the Freightliner application and will fit in a Cummins Dodge.

Green machine or mean green in PA makes a 200 amp direct drop in for our trucks, I got one and it is great. WD

Well...

I called "Mean Green" today and had a very nice chat with them and have one on the way. Their 2 year unconditional warranty and 300,000 mile life expectancy sold me. So thank you to all who posted here and thanks to WD for showing me someone here in my own state. I will post after I recieve it and have it mounted... ... Andy

Well I got a chance to install my Mean-green today and man what a job. I sure wish I would have had it BEFORE we did the fan install as it would have been alot easier job. Sine I didn't have it when we did the Flex-A-Lite fan install I had to wait and do it today when I got some time. To make a long story short I had to remove the fan assembly again to get the long bottom bolt out and then go back and reinstall them after the alternator was in and mounted.

The alternator was a easy to do deal once the bottom bolt was out as it slid right into place. All the connectors utilized the factory harness and it was a direct bolt in. No problems except for a skinned knuckle while holding the nut on the rear of the alternator and the wrench slipped,LOL.

Once the belt was reinstalled and all the battery cables reattached I started the truck and the difference was immediately seen. My digital volt gauge showed 13. 8 and stayed there even with the FASS,fans, headlights and A/C on. Its a nice part which I am glad that one of our members here recommended. I will add two shots of it installed on my truck.

With that I will say THANK YOU to WD for the recommendation and say THANKS to Mean-Green for a great product... ... . Andy

Here is the link to Mean-Green Inc for those who may need it.

hammer,

great report!... what is the model number or part number? is in the high output alternator area or the 200 amp alt that they describe for the duramax?. .

I had previously emailed Mean Green & was told that they didn't have an alternator for the 24 valve trucks. Hammer's truck looks to be a 12 valve.

I guess we'll have to wait & see... .

Would be nice if there was a " single wire " ,"direct replacement "for the
alternator ( mechanical replacement , without the PCM control )

Excellent source for alt's

Try this guy: Kodiak Industries Inc. - Home. Hooked me up with a couple of 220 amp alt's for my big truck and really know his stuff. Put 'about 400k trouble free miles on the alt so far. YMMV

Great people to deal with, meticlous (sp) workmanship and extreemly honest.
